Socialize Easily With EasySocial 1.3.26

Socialize Easily With EasySocial 1.3.26

While we're fixing EasyBlog 5 for the next beta release, the developer team managed to allocate some of their rest time to build the next 'minor' release of EasySocial, EasySocial 1.3.26. To be honest,  'minor' is not the precise word to use because when I look at the changelog, I am baffled at how long the list is. Not to mention that when I was briefed by Mark; it took me quite some time to digest that this is actually a 'minor' release.

Well, let's move on to what are the new features that are currently available in this version.

Enhanced Usability In Groups

Our main goal for Groups is to simplify the process. Hence, we have ensured that process to join groups is not hindered by annoying popups. Users can directly join groups from the group listing page, without having to click on any annoying popups nor having to leave that page at all.

b2ap3_thumbnail_join-group-button.pngThe highlighted button ensures that users are able to quickly join group without having to deal with annoying popups. This increases the usability and thus makes your social networking site more pleasant to use. Check it out :

Handling group-based social networking site has just got easier with EasySocial. :)

Moderation In Groups

Hey, I understand how frustrating it is to not having the option to set moderation on posts. It doesn't take long to convince Mark and the developers that post moderation in Groups is a must; who would want to let their groups gets infested with spams, inappropriate posts and whatnots, aye? We have added this feature; you can now set "Post Moderation" in your groups via Custom Fields. Here's how it looks like, being from the poster's end :

Seems that James's post is under moderation after all!

So what about from the admin's view? From the administrator's (or the group owner's) view, we've built a filter called "Pending Posts" which filters out all pending posts, waiting to be approve. Let's see the site's admin approves James's post.

Congratulations James, your post has been approved. :D

Stream Enhancement : Added 'Pin Item'

Some things are worth putting up in your own personal profile's stream. We have augmented the stream by adding the option to pin posts. Users are now able to pin their activity so that it stays on top of their own profile stream. Here's an example :

b2ap3_thumbnail_pinned-post.png

You can see that the pinned post is marked with a 'star'. Group owners/admin can also apply pinned posts to their respected groups. Use this creatively and your site user won't be missing out on any important information.

To ensure that this feature is easily managed, we've also added the 'Pinned Item' filter in the dashboard. Oh, and this also works with Groups.

New Filters in Profile

New filters are now available in the profile's page. We totally believe that this will help with the navigation of your site.

b2ap3_thumbnail_filters-profile.png

Filters should already be available by default.

Amplified Link-Sharing

Sharing is the key feature of today's social networking. We've amplified our component's feature by adding the image's dimension prior to the user clicking on the share button. You can see the meta image's dimension here :

b2ap3_thumbnail_share-dimension.png

Pretty neat, huh?

Set Your Cache To Amazon S3

Another cool new feature, though this will excites the administrators, is the option to set your cache to Amazon S3.

b2ap3_thumbnail_amazonS3.png

Simply navigate to your backend > Component > EasySocial > Settings > Remote Storage, fill up the Amazon S3 required fields and your cache is up and ready to be stored in Amazon S3's server.

What's N5XT?

We will work on EasySocial's development, though currently we're putting a little bit more priority in EasyBlog 5. Once EasyBlog 5 beta is released, we will push a little bit more on EasySocial's development while we wait for all of the bug reports for EasyBlog 5 beta. We take our user's satisfaction very seriously and if we can pull of these features while we're working on EasyBlog 5, imagine what we can achieve should we have released EasyBlog 5 and focus 120% on EasySocial. :)

You can purchase EasySocial now, or, if you have an active license, you can immediately download it from your dashboard.

Let us know what you think! :)

Nice update! Well done to all involved.

Rushing off to update now... hoping to find that the awesome new PIN feature is available in EVENTS too!

After auto-update from back-end it still shows as being outdated on version 1.3.25... Is that just a minor version reference missed or indicative of a bigger upgrade problem?

(also as noted before on prior upgrades, "Initializing Database Stored Functions" remains showing "Initializing" despite everything else switching to "Success")

The auto updater needs a minor fix, installing a new launcher fixes the issue.

You guys are awesome! Kudos to Mark and the team for a minor release, are you serious Mark minor? You just added a new feature and you call it minor. No complaints here just happy to get a nice cool group feature

Thanks!
Jackson

Thank you Jackson. Well, that was my thought exactly! I was briefed by him, was taking notes when I noticed the long list of features. I then gave him the weird stare LOL

And yes, he insisted that this is just a 'minor' release.

Haven't tried it yet but figured I would go ahead and ask.

The Group Moderation Function, does the Group Admin/Moderator receive a notification for this also? Or just a filter marker? A notification would be ideal and allow them the adjust the frequency of the notifications via the Notification Preferences Menu. In addition, it would be nice to add another layer to the Groups so that you can assign roles to users within the group. For example there are currently group owners and group...

If a post comes in to be moderated it would be nice to choose who can/can not moderate. Some ACL levels if you will within the group.

Otherwise, nice job and congrats as there are some key elements in here I have been asking for.

Thanks,
James

James, right now there are no notifications yet but you can view moderated items via the "Pending Posts" filter but yeah, it would be ideal to have notifications though.

I don't get the bit about joining groups - I have 1.3.25 and it seems to do what is claimed to be new for 1.3.26? What I feel really will help with groups is the simple addition of a "see all groups" link on the popular groups module.

Hey Andrew, how's it going over there?

Well, previously, when you wanted to join groups from the group listing page, you will be 'greeted' (or annoyed!) with a popup. Joining will redirect you towards the groups' main page. Well, we simplify the process.

I quite like the fact that it greets you! Perhaps this behaviour could be made an option? Even better could be to allow the group creator to decide if to greet new users and if so what message to show them?

Also, as I mentioned, I really don't get why the module that shows top groups doesn't have a link to "see all groups" in the same way that event module has link to "see all events" - seems a glaring omission!

cool beans. One problem that remains with all of the updates is that customizations to the defaults get overwritten every time. I mentioned this near the beginning of the life of ES and it has persisted. How about just including a switch at the beginning of the installer? for example:

Overwrite existing default images: Yes / No ?

Template overrides are the best way to go to make managing overrides easier. I personally believe this should be the standard that the Stacked team should mention instead of simply doing file replacements. Replacements for testing, but overrides for long term. I do however use one for the image module to display the image titles (this is not native to the module at the moment) and the override has been working just great even many version changes later.

It would be quite tricky to create a system that checks all the ES files for modifications which is why I believe everyone who wants/needs mods should use a template override. They aren't complicated either, however I do understand that the directories are a little different sometimes based on the view (making it potentially a little tricky).

Josh, I appreciate what you are saying. I do use template overrides. I chose not to use them for certain items such as the default avatar/cover images. If I recall correctly this was based upon advice given by the SI team.

Would love to hear what they say about this subject. Back in the Community Builder days I recall having trouble overriding an avatar image, so perhaps php files are easier to override?

Another factor to consider is if someone has 7-10 mods. If they were asked the question for each mod on every update it could be a bit more of a chore to update. However manually updating them would also be a big chore which is why I'm hoping that template overrides are the best option.

Hey guys,

Great discussion! I have to admit, these are actually a bit out of my league as I am not well-versed in the codes and development of EasySocial. However, I do know that to build such updater is a bit complicated. I'll bring this to Mark's attention.

Hmmm could be a coincidence.... but just after upgrade users can't seem to add a post to their events stream anymore.... no error message or anything... just type the 'whats new' on the stream... hit send... and it vanishes. Anyone else can check this on their site to see if it's just me or not?!

Good catch Andy. You are correct that adding new posts in "what's new" on event pages disappear.

Great to see good improvements coming for ES and with the focus of "easy to use and understand".

Just take the best bit from Facebook and then innovate new smart functions for ES is great..

Hi guys, just want to check and verify... Are there any other issues except for the updater not working? I read something from @Paul about the 'customized defaults' getting reverted back to 'ES defaults' after doing an update? What exactly does this mean?

As mentioned above, posting to event stream is not working properly. As long as events are not critical to your site, updating is worth it. ES 1.3.27 should have this resolved.

There's actually an issue with our Events, which one of our Tech Support guy Ezrul have provided a solution with. You can get the solution (and download the files needed) here : http://stackideas.com/forums/404-on-event-filter

On behalf of the Stack Ideas team, I apologize for the issue.

To hide it, I would apply the following code to your template (clear browser cache too):

.es-profile .es-sidebar .es-widget:first-child {display: none !important;}

To fix a padding issue caused by this I would then apply:

body div#fd.es .es-widget + .es-widget {margin-top: 0 !important;}

Sorry, it seems an old demo up there for months "You are running on an older version of EasySocial 1.3.8. Please update to the latest version 1.3.28."

Can someone set up a demo with the current and above features?

Hi Rani,

Thank you for pointing this one out. Actually, we sometimes manually update the files and hence might have missed out of few stuffs. This is the ensure that the script that we run on the demo site doesn't get messed up.

However, I believe it's time for us to apply the whole update package to our demo site and run the script again. I've forwarded this to the team in-charge, they will fix it as soon as possibe.
