Ending the year with a big bang!

Ending the year with a big bang!

It is the time of the year where we wrap things up for 2016. It has been a very challenging year for the team and I throughout this year but it is definitely an awesome experience for us as we had to overcome most of our worst nightmares. The following week marks a new year and a new chapter for StackIdeas and for most of you. Before we wrap this up, I would also like to share with you some progress and updates:

Mobile Web Package

When we initially developed the mobile web app for EasySocial, we were under the impression that it would be suitable for most sites. The mobile web app would automatically switch the layout to a mobile layout when you are on EasySocial pages giving your users a richer mobile experience while browsing your site. This idea worked great when tested on our local devices and machines.

Then we started challenging ourselves by putting it on a remote server with a pretty slow connection and that is when all hell broke loose. Not only is the experience bad, the whole ecosystem would fail miserably when you navigate between different extensions as the layout looks different on EasySocial pages (with apps) and non EasySocial Pages.

Hence, there was a delay in releasing this app because we have rewritten everything (yes, before we even release it out) from scratch and took a different approach. Instead of it being an EasySocial app, we have packaged it so that the package contains a Joomla plugin and a Mobile template. With this approach, the whole experience is extremely smooth and the best of them all, it's blazing fast! Almost like a native app.

The entire mobile template package will be available at $59 for this week only.

Stream Anywhere Module

I have to extend my personal gratitude to Sabih. Early this month, he posted a request for a module which allows people to render a story form and a stream anywhere on the site and I definitely love the concept and idea. Not only does it add a lot of interactivity on your site, one can also consider it the "Tree of life" for your social network.

Why? A social network is all about interactivity and activity generation. Activities is the heart of your social network operation and without any activities, your site would not be as cheerful as it should. With this module, one can publish the module anywhere on your site as long as your template supports module positions (Which almost 99.9% template does).

The module will then render the status update form and activities. Here's the beauty of it, the generated status updates from the module will be fed into your dashboard / profile and the activity stream that appears on the page is dedicated to the page itself. In other words, your page would contain unique activity stream based on the page that you are viewing.

This module will be available to early adopters for $49 this week only.

Article Stream Plugin

This awesome plugin allows you to add a story form and a stream that is associated with the tags from Joomla Articles, K2 and EasyBlog. The tags used on the post on any of these extensions will appear as hashtags on the story form allowing your users to quickly post some updates related to the article that they are viewing.

This plugin will be available to early adopters for $39 this week only.

Echo Template

When we initially previewed Echo template a couple of months ago, we actually built most of the layouts on EasySocial 1.4.x thinking that it would also work with EasySocial 2.x (We have not decided to update the themes structure yet during that time) . Before we got to release this awesome template, we took a huge move forward with EasySocial 2.0 by restructuring and revamping EasySocial theme files so that your site would be blazing fast. Because of that, the template needs to be updated to be able to support the new themes structure in EasySocial 2.0. It's not an easy task but it's definitely worth while.

Pre-order for Echo Template starts now at $49 until it is released. We are expecting the release of Echo on January 2017.

Conversekit

This is one of the most challenging plugin that we have ever created and it has definitely not been in our way as there are a lot of other implications since the plugin should work on any page. Conversekit is not just another chat system for your Joomla site. Conversekit is powered by the conversations engine from EasySocial and it requires EasySocial to be installed (As of now, until we move it out from EasySocial later)

The most difficult areas when dealing with Conversekit is to reduce the load on the client's end and of course, for this to be hosted on any shared host, it needs to utilize as minimal CPU as possible or your web hosters would not like it. In Conversekit, we have created an algorithm to spread the loading times based on an "affinity" system where the polling only happens when a user becomes more active and goes into an almost idle state when the page isn't being used.

Pre-order for Conversekit starts now at $59 with 12 months worth of updates and support. We are expecting the birth of Conversekit on January 2017.

Wrapping Things Up

Now that most of these tasks are off our shoulders, we are going to embrace 2017 with an almost empty arm with tons of new stuffs that will be introduced in 2017. Before I end this lengthy post, on behalf of the team, I would like to extend our gratitude and we are extremely thankful to have your support throughout these years. Without your support, we would not have achieved so much.

Happy New Year & Happy Holidays Everyone! Thank you for your continuous support!

If you're releasing mobile web template, can you add emojis or emoji keyboard?

Right now, our users access ES on mobile and post with emojis. However, the emoji's show up as "???" on ES.

Hello Mark,

Hello Mark,

as you know I switched from JomSocial to EasySocial and I love Easysocial. The support is great, the developement-cycle is really quick, there are a lot of great things to say about EasySocial and Stackideas. Unfortunatelly ... with every new anouncement you make the pricing more difficult and it feels more and more like there is a kind of "cosmetics" comming in.

During 2016 you started to mark some plugins as "charged". This should be okay ... but it didn´t feel good because you changed some of the basics of EasySocial to "charged". For example the docker: A good navigation is a must for a website. I don´t see any reason why a basic navigation is charged extra and not includet. There is nearly no options in the docker, it is really a minimal module, but it is charget. The same with some other features that where in for free and now they are charged extra.

Now, with the end of the year, you share four new features with us. And ... ALL of them are charged extra. Things like a messaging-system are charged extra? Shouldn´t this be a basics? Are you willing to support two kinds of messaging-systems, the includet one and the conversekit? Stuff like a "Stream-Module" are charged extra? And while a few months ago you said, that the charging of plugins is only once, now it is written beside the conversekit that this price is for 12 months of updates.

If you need more money for developement, please just raise the price and don´t start to mark one feature after the other as charged extra. This is not a fair way. I already suggested you to at least offer a "all-inclusive"-License for a higher price.

What is the next step? Will Avatar-Upload be charged in future? Will groups and events be charged? Will videos be charged? Will the user-registration be charged? Will the admin-access be charged? Many essential features are charged now, and if you think I am kidding: Part of the registration-process is charged extra already (the registration-requester, which was includet in the last version).

Your update exactly says: We have five new featuers for EasySocial and if you want to have them, you will have to pay 255 Dollars for them. That´s what this Blog-Posting is all about: Five new products for 255 Dollars. And not a single developement for EasySocial which is not charged extra.

We are paying EasySocial already. Wouldn´t it be nice to pay for a product and have it, instead of paying for a product and then pay for every feature extra?

I love EasySocial, but I really don´t like this direction of developement ...

All the best, Julian!

But the plugins are not bound to a domain and have no subsription time so it is like a ilfetime subscription with one payment. Due to the plugins we customers have a big progress for our sites with very new and sexy functions the last months. This speed of development is worth the cash, at least in my opinion...

We have a different business model and we are not like Apple, their revenue comes from their hardware and they could provide most of their software for free.

You wrote "EasySocial would cost a lot more because we needed to support all these additional functionality"
So you mean, es is cheaper, because you don´t support this features.
But then again, the features are charged, because you support them.

And then, you write that it´s a one-time-payment. But the support is ongoing.
So I don´t understand the logic behind that. You don´t include it in ES (even if they are basics that every good installation would need) to keep the price down, but then...

If all plugins where inside the ES package, the price would go up and I prefer a small recurring price with one-time payments, you do not?

I am not customer at Stackideas only but compared to other big components I can say that the one-time payment addons are a big step forward and probably a high risk for the developers.

Not having to pay for this plugins does not mean you would have gotten them for free. The result would have been you will not get those or get them very late.

I think having new features that come in fast and have a one-time payment are fine. But too agree with you in one point, there is a limit but we are still far from that one I think. And to be honest, I think after some time maybe some plugins may go free and fuse with the ES standard package as it happened to the EasyDiscuss app, which allows creating threads out of ES. I have bought that and now it is free. I have no idea if this might happen in future, but it shows that sometimes it is worth paying for having new features now. Depending on the amount of sales Stackideas will know if it is the right way or not.

The more features we add into the extension, the more support questions we would receive and to sustain, we need to increase the price of the extension but this would be unfair to people who don't need such functionality.

Again, not everything will be made as a separate addon. These modules and plugins are something that you can live without if you don't need it.

We are not forcing you to buy it. It's entirely up to you. If you need such functionality, then buy it. Otherwise, you could...

I'm very pleased with the way things are in terms of business model for Stackideas. I understand the slight costs of convenience (having to look into the apps you want), however this approach allows many of us who do not want extras to have a lighter system. I'll also point out that non of the "missing addons" from the core are absolutely essential unlike other big extensions I've seen (of course they are great additions). you are also getting Premium support with every purchase here. Also will this keep ES small and clean meaning you can add what you need just like big company's do with plugins: VST Steinberg, Adobe, etc.

These are apps, plugins and modules that you may or may not use. If we include this in the price of the extension, people who don't use it would end up paying for us to maintain this functionality.

If this is something that you find it useful, then you would only purchase it once. No renewals, nothing.

ES has the greates support you can imagine, a very quick developement-circle and seems more stable to me.
JS has a nicer layout, integrates much better in other components and is not charged extra for every little plugin. However, the most important thing to me was: The JS-Support was getting terrible after the original founder left the project, so this was my main reason to switch. All in all, I really love the quality in support, I am sad because of missing good templates/navigation-concepts and I fear the future when more and more features are getting charged.

I still think I am happier with ES then I was with JS, but it is not as enthusiastic as it was in the begining.

Test it with the big template-providers: Take any template from Rockettheme, Joomlashine or Joomlart, which is not directly created for EasySocial, and install Easysocial. You will have many conflicts in the whole layout.

The docker is a perfect example for this behaviour: The original navigation (navbar) is nice in wanderers and others of your own templates, but nearly unusable on external pages. So you developed the docker: An (extra-charged) module which shows up on the top or on the bottom of each page.

1. There is no option to control the size of the docker. It will always spread through the whole page, which looks strange on a wide desktop.

2. Not even the color is changable or (easy) adjustable to the template.

3. By being on the top it conflicts with all other movable menus on the top. This affects for example EVERY template from Joomlashine.

Because of that I gave you the suggestion already years ago to adjust the ES-Menu-Modole. This is the module that can easily be integrated on EVERY template without destroying any design. Unfortunately, with the last update you even shortened the functionality.

For me, the compination of any external template with ES is "not nice", it just doesn´t look good and it seems you have no interest in adjusting this somehow.

The next example is the activity-stream: With Jomsocial I was using Tigracon and had many different design-options. I could place items side by side, they could "move in", they could go from top to bottom, all kind of this stuff. In the moment there are exactly zero options for the layout of the activity-stream.

Stuff like that ... it´s always only focused on your layout-concepts and there is not way to change that.

Once again, to have it easy: Take a template from Joomlashine and try to integrate ES in a nice way. Try it with the navigation, try it with the activity-stream, stuff like that.

THIS is what was much easier with JS.
And I am trying to tell you this since years.

All the best, Julian!

Not sure which particular template are you referring to but Joomlart has a template designed for EasySocial. Joomlashine is also working on a new template that is designed specifically to work with EasySocial.

Other templates should work fine with EasySocial out of the box (although they do not have specific designs for EasySocial)

As for your comments regarding Tigracon, to be honest I never envisioned a site that would have a stream with all those insane amount of interactivity on what is already extremely heavy to the browser. With all those overheads, your users would leave your site in no time.

You are caught up between "not possible to" versus "don't understand how to".

Yep, that is correct. When you place the Stream anywhere module, stream items generated here will be unique to the current page. It will still be visible on the streams in the dashboard and there will be a link that would link you back to this page.

As for Echo, there are still some teething issues with it and we're still addressing most of these issues. It will work with both EasyBlog and EasyDiscuss too. All our templates are lightweight and we do not render any frameworks

Hi Mark,

Can we use Stream anywhere in custom component as well? and would the dashboard stream include a link to the page where comment was done.

Are these comment stream bound by #tags? so that in the main dashboard stream can be sorted by comments on a particular item? and would the page title be included in the main dashboard stream?

Secondly can we disable "Broadcast, events, files, link, photos, polls & videos" for this module?

Demo would be nice

Yes, that is correct. If you place the module anywhere on your site, streams generated on that page are tied to that page only and it will also appear on your dashboard. They are not tied with hashtags (unlike the article stream plugin)

It's not possible to turn off these buttons but it's definitely worth considering if we could exclude some of these features in the module settings in the future.

Are you referring to the plugin or the module eh? For plugins, they are identified by hashtags just like how you utilize the hashtags on the stream

Anyway, it's not possible to "sort" them currently either through the plugin or the module but for items generated from the module, there would be a link back to the original page.

Ugh! Good grief.

Not happy with this at all.

It is crazy to sell bundles as such a great thing only to turn right around and un-bundle without even giving us a clear understanding of what you removed and why. Along with what to buy to get that feature or function BACK if we liked it.

Completely losing faith in this - it's bait and switch to me. Or just really chaotic biz practices.

Either way, it leaves me with a very uncomfortable feeling that my simple "Buy it - it works" is now a "buy 1 of these, and 2 of those and hope you got your bases covered because the next upgrade could take more features (in the interest of giving me, the consumer a better experience /sarcasm off)

If you guys insist on this random un-bundling (and I see that you do) at least give us a very specific document with EXACTLY what you pulled out, what you made into add-ons and what we can expect next.

Otherwise, we are paying you for a very uncertain future.

I became your customer initially because I wanted a solution I could rely on. Not this.

thank you,

Bridgette

We only removed a single feature from the core and made it a plugin and the reason for that is because it is expensive to maintain such features. Till date, anyone who bought the url shortener has at least posted 2 support request.

It is sad to see the amount of appreciation given that we have also provided a lot of apps and modules for free. Please have some time and take a look at the free modules and apps. There are a ton of it on the store.

Hi Mark,

I am sorry but that is not true.

Some very basic features we used are no longer available.

One example: In the mini reg we had users picking an avatar so they don't all look the same.

That is gone.

I am not unaware of the 'freebie' stuff in your app store. I appreciate that you and other developers have made such things available. We don't use much other than the items that integrate all your products. So frankly, we thought those parts should have been in the core.

That said - the free apps have nothing to do with what I am discussing.

My point is you made changes to the core product. We have lost some features and you made add-ons we can purchase. This is 100% your right but as a customer, I look to "what's next?" and to me, it seems that StackIdeas does not document what we can expect (changes coming) nor do we see detailed documentation of changes. Just simple one liners in the change logs.

ES 2.0 was a big surprise. I used the alpha and thought "ok, it's not finished, the other stuff will be added back in ..." but it wasn't.

You also insist on having access to our 1 site that we list for support. As a rule, we do not give access to a live (production) site for security reasons. NO ONE gets access. I have offered to replicate the system on a dev site so the lingering issues with Twitter logins and EasyBlog can be sorted out but I got no response to that. Just a "we don't have access to your site"... um. yeah.

I don't understand why anyone would give people access to a live site for any reason. That it is a standard support request frustrates me.

Bottom line dream wish list

1. If you plan to change core features and functions, please let us know ahead of time so we can decide if the benefits outweigh the changes and risks.

2. Improve your documentation so we don't have to ask for so much help on the forums.

3. Allow a dev site for support instead of a live one.

Please understand that while this software and your company are the center of your world, they shouldn't be the center of mine. I should spend a lot less time trying to figure out ES stuff and a lot more on promoting my own site. IMHO.

As always Mark, thanks for listening.

You are getting out of topic here by ranting unnecessarily. May I know how or what has this got to do with the additional plugins / apps?

If there is a problem, we need the access to your site as there are more than 100 different setup and configuration that even we have never encountered before.

Issues related to Twitter and Facebook are particularly tricky because these social integrations are locked to urls from their respective app and you cannot troubleshoot from a development site unless you create a separate development app.

As a matter of fact, to show you how committed we are with the dedication of our support team, if you think that our support isn't good enough for you, please write to us and we will execute the refunds for your account.

Hey Bright,

The stream anywhere module allows you to display activity stream that was posted particularly for the current page only. Unlike the stream module, where it displays all activity stream from the site on the page.

Hey. I´m interested in Stream Anywhere Module and Article Stream Plugin. I have some questions.

1. Module: In the screenshot you have seem to have two comment fields? The one below is the module? More screenshot or demo would be nice. Its not clear.
2. Module: When posting in a article. Is the article owner notified?
3. Plugin: When posting on a article. Is the article owner notified?
4. Plugin: Are the link to the article posted along with the comment (and tags) in dashboard?

Happy New Year!

Yes, if you post a blog post with tags, those tags are then converted into hashtags for the stream item.

Thanks.
How about implementing the article author notification (at least for plugin)?

Regarding 4.
Lets say i comment a article with this plugin. The comment itself is posted and are visible on the article itself and in dashboard.
Is the link to the article generated when posting, so when I´m looking in dashboard I get an idea on what specific article is being commented?

Sorry if Im not being clear.

If it is the plugin, it could be a good idea that we can implement in the near future Plugins can know the author of the object but not the stream anywhere module because stream anywhere can be placed anywhere on any pages and it's difficult for us to identify the author's e-mail address.

In some ways, it is similar to comments but it has more to it than just a comment. Conventional comment system would list comments from a unique article. If you post a comment on an article, your comment would only be seen from that article.

I have interacted with Mark from the days he was supporting Jomsocial. Mark is as talented and hardworking as any developer I have ever interacted with. He takes intense pride in his products. He leads an unparalleled team of developers and support technicians. You will never find a team this attentive to support and this talented anywhere in Joomla or any other OpenSource project for that matter.

Stackideas is making enterprise grade software. Maybe you take for granted exactly what they are making because you are used to seeing it by now, but you will never find software of this quality and scope anywhere in the OpenSource/Freemium market.

You cannot expect the team to continually add functionality without considering the enormous development time and cost incurred or the inevitable support requests this generates.

I for one am grateful to Mark and his time and can't wait to see what he and his team cooks up. In some ways, I am excited that the team is releasing additional paid services because these are the ones that understandably get more attention by the company.

So carry on Stackideas. I can't wait to see what you dream up next.

c. Module positions at the bottom for example for latest news items, comments, tags, groups, etc

Yes, we will have module positions at the footer.

2. Sticky header so you don’t have to scroll up to the top to navigate to a different menu item

This could be achieved with Docker but perhaps we could even add this in Echo. Food for thought.

3. Color schemes. Or at least an easy way to convert the colorscheme to a custom color without having to fear template updates and start over again

We don't have settings for color schemes and to be honest I don't see a need in it. Adding these kind of tools are overheads on the site and again, would you rather sacrifice long term performance gain versus a one time modification using css overrides?

Modifying colors is pretty easy when you create a user.css file without worrying about updates in the future.

Hope this clarifies your questions.

The point of having people go to my Facebook and Twitter pages is that most people go through their timelines multiple times a day. And when I have an EB post which automatically creates a Facebook and Twitter post, people automatically see that in their timelines and hopefully click the post to read more on my site. And once they are there, they are going to check their ES updates as well. So interaction between social media solutions is a win-win situation is my opinion.

Hopefully you are hungry

Good to know. That makes updating the template a breese

One more question.
I am not to sure if I understand it correctly. Will the Mobile Web Package work also with EB, ED and Komento? And is it a one time fee or a 6/12 months subscription?

Hi SI Team & Users.

I came from CB to Easy Social via Easy Blog. I found the Community Builder solutions confusing and support painful. Thus I switched to SI a decision that I have not regretted for one second. SI are flat out amazing.

Frankly what with ES & EB & a couple of other components I probably have every thing I need already. Well almost…

Payment gateways:

I tired the payment gateway that was announced with much fanfare on this Blog a year or two ago. And was far from happy with it. I have tried Hika Shop which was promised deep down in a blog post in a comment some where in the last 6 months. The documentation is great, the component is powerful and the support is way up there. It is one of the best Components that I have ever used.

Hika Shop & Easy Social integration would be in my eyes a win/win/win situation.

a) More customers for Stackideas
b) More customers for Hika Shop
c) More (paying) customers for people who build sites with these components.

A payment gateway would help me and maybe others to buy yet more wonderful SI & Co components = win/win/win

Is there any news about Easy Social / Hika Shop integration?

Paul

Paul just read my mind. Mark, I hope StackIdeas has plans for an ES shop app or integration with a 3rd party one like Hikashop. I'd like to create an ES+Jreviews+ecommerce site but the only ecommerce component that has that capability right now is Quick2Cart. It's not bad but I'd like to have another option to consider, preferably one that will be supported in the new mobile web app. thanks for considering

Echo Template seduced me. It is ergonomic, suitable for tactile supports (the buttons are big enough). I love Cover Photos that cover the entire screen and frame that overlaps it in part. My only criticism would be that the colors are too bland. The background would be better in light colors, and the modules on white background. Maybe you should get inspired from Facebook on this point.

Finally ConverseKit. You surprise me. It is fabulous !
Very fluid, very practical, instantaneous. ConverseKit could take the place of the EasySocial Conversations tool.

I have not had the opportunity to test Stream Anywhere Module and Article Stream Plugin. But I imagine they are also well designed.

Again Bravo. You do a fantastic job. You are accessible and very pleasant.
I wish you an excellent year 2017 !!

Thank you

Hi Supporter,

I know it is not the answer that you are looking for. But you can get Moodle working with Easy Social today with the help of Joomdle. Joomdle/Antonio is amazing and whilst NOT for the faint hearted is like a Swiss army knife!

- There is a “Single Sign-On (and off)” for Moodle & ES/CB/Jomsocial
- Moodle gets put in a wrapper in Joomla
- ES & Moodle users are synced
- Sign up for a Moodle course & get put in an ES Group (e.g. study group)
- Get ES points for joining courses etc

- Joomdle also plays with Hikashop.

I have Moodle/Joomdle/Easy Social & Hikashop all working together!

As good as Moodle is it does as of now feel like antiquated bloatware. Thus in the long run I am very open to something meaner and leaner… I will definitely keep an eye on OSTraining. Thanks for the tip.

The read more is now fixed on our site. This will also be fixed on Komento 3.0.3
