EasyArticles Stable Release

EasySocial 1.2.0 RC1

EasySocial 1.2.0 RC1

I have been wanting to write a blog on the progress of the beta test but was a little occupied with the development of EasySocial. Since I have some time today, I would like to announce the availability of EasySocial 1.2 RC1 in our Issues section.

The entire team have been working really hard for this release and in total, we have addressed over 350 Issues and also worked on over 100 different improvements over the existing version of EasySocial. Most of you who have been following us with the beta may have already noticed the significant difference between each beta releases and also in the RC1 version. Within just a span of 5 months, we have made a record till date with a total of 18,500 commits! This is really a great milestone achieved for such a short period of time.

These are some of the improvements that we have made since the blog post earlier:

Redesigned Story

The story on the stream has served most of us pretty well and we have decided to take a hit on it by simplifying the process of posting an update in the social network. With the new form factor of the story, we have simplified what was previously complex but still retained the features.

b2ap3_thumbnail_redesigned_story.png

Application Filters

There is not a single extension out there that does this right now and we are the first to be bold to give this a try. With these application filters, users can easily filter through the streams and view what they prefer to view.

b2ap3_thumbnail_stream_filters.png

Stream Labels

Instead of displaying a label on the stream determining the type of the stream, we have also introduced a better way of displaying the stream items. We believe that with the new icons in the stream, it gives your site a pretty unique look and it doesn't have a boring and dull stream like any other social networks out there.

b2ap3_thumbnail_improvised_stream.png

Social Sharing on the Stream

We have also added the ability to share your stream items to famous and reputable Social Networks like Facebook, VK, Twitter and many more. You could even copy the link and share it with your friends. You will also be able to utilize the very same file manager within your discussions too!

b2ap3_thumbnail_social_sharing.png

Awesome File Manager for Groups

In the previous blog post, we did mention that Groups will be available in 1.2 and we thought we wouldn't want to miss out on adding an awesome file manager in groups to allow better collaboration between group members.

b2ap3_thumbnail_filemanager.png

Migrator for Community Builder

There has been quite a number of request for this after the JomSocial Migrator; therefore we also added a new migrator that allows you to migrate your existing Community Builder profiles over to EasySocial.

 b2ap3_thumbnail_community_builder_migrator.png

Tasks App Makeover

In the earlier releases, the tasks app looks rather boring. We have decided to add some makeover to the tasks app this time:

b2ap3_thumbnail_tasks_app.png

Quicker Signup Process

We have also added the ability for users to easily register on the site using the Quick Registration area. This would encourage more user registrations on the site and grow your community faster!

b2ap3_thumbnail_quick_registration.png

CDN for Javascripts and CSS

You can now configure EasySocial to serve all the Javascript and CSS files by configuring the Pull CDN settings. With the new CDN addition, you can now offload all your unnecessary bandwidth usages and keep your community light and speedy.

b2ap3_thumbnail_cdn_settings.png

These are just some of the additions and it's only the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of other improvements that we made that I can't really list them all out here. Also, on behalf of the team, we would like to thank all beta testers who have been helping us out with the beta releases earlier.

Update: K2 Integrations

In this release candidate as well, we have also included K2 integrations with EasySocial. You can now filter stream items from K2 items or even display them right under your profile. Apart from that, it also enhances the existing K2 article item

b2ap3_thumbnail_easysocial_k2_integrations.png

As EasySocial 1.2 is now RC1, I'd like to advise you to not install this version into your live site as it may render your site with errors. Kindly wait till the final stable version is out only then you can install in your live site. For now, use this version only in your local site.

Cheers and Happy Socializing!

waaaaou "Migrator for Community Builder." ! that's so great

Nope, it will not delete existing users but if you have manually migrated, you may have a problem with "duplicated users"

In fact, i do not use CB anymore
I do not migrate data, my users have fill their new user profil (ES)

ES user ID is related to Joomla user id, no ???
CB is related to joomla users too ?
migrator will create new ES user (duplicate) ? refer to same joomla user ?

Anyway... i'll test on a duplicate site with RC1 and see how it's work and how to manage

Sorry, what I meant was actually the user's data. Yeah, perhaps you should test this out and post them on issues page for any findings that you discovered

Hey Mark,

Great to see filters are implemented here, a question: did you have the time to add filters for the different profiles?

Hi Mark,

I've just finished configuring the basics on our new site http://www.crowdmentor.co.za with EasySocial, EasyDiscuss, EasyBlog, and Kommento installed. I'm particularly looking forward to groups. I see so many opportunities with it. I'll be testing the new version on our Dev server in anticipation.

This looks great, I wish I had the time for the last month to help test things... however I've been given the task to run a major community site which stopped me from doing these extra stuff :-\

I can't wait til it is ready and hopefully I will be done with the other community site improvements. Great job StackIdeas and Mark!

Thank you so much for offering an alternative from jomsocial and community builder. I can now migrates my groups from jomsocial over finally. I have been using community builder over the past and moved over to jomsocial. It has been a nightmare!! The support is stellar here! Keep up the good work!

Hi Mark,
Great news, I am eagerly waiting for the stable release.

1- I prefer the stream label over the icons (sorry, but those icons look dull). Imagine, if you have 10 different stream type, then you will have to remember 10 different icon type. It is easier just to look at the label and tell what type of stream it is.
2- Why SHARE on every stream post, remember 'KISS'. I don't want my stream to be too crowded that it confuses you.
3-You have a EDIT, LINK and PHOTO icon on the share box,...

3-You have a EDIT, LINK and PHOTO icon on the share box, why not a VIDEO icon? That way people will know that you can post youtube/vimeo.
4- Most of us are new to CDN, do you have any recommendation so we can test it out to see if it improves our loading time.

Thanks

Thanks for the input checksum and yes, we have already expected such "inquiries" and they are now all made optional in the theme settings and EasySocial's settings

Video icon will only be available in the next release You can actually try out maxcdn

I have had a blast helping to report issues over on the tracker page, the attention to detail the Stack Ideas team take with fixing issues is amazing. They have added NEW features based on user feedback. Other Joomla teams should pay attention to how the team get to a stable version without bugs.

Now its time to add some ideas for the team to consider.

Thank you.

Hello, I am curious about the CB Migration steps... is it a "Wizard" workflow? i.e. interactive CB field -> ES field mapping. Does any field value conversion happen? I mean, do you support all available CB field types? i.e. Integers/Floats stay numbers etc.

Thanks in advance.

Most of the fields that is included in CB should be supported but I am not sure if you have a custom field since we don't really know which field you are using for the site.

I had just posted this in the Status Report thread and the RC1 mail popped in. I'm repeating here just in case the old thread is no longer monitored.

I noted that discussions will not be powered by easyDiscuss but rather use a new light weight discussions engine. We have hundreds if not thousands of existing group discussions in easyDiscuss. Do you think that an easyDiscuss app for groups will be difficult?

K2 integration. Very interesting. Wouldn't Zoo integration be nice too ......

Stackideas team is top quality and they really listen to customers. ES 1.2 will be great!
I will wait for 1.3 because of a few features I need, say image quality and Imagick support (pleeeease ), but maybe they will add support for it in a 1.2.x version.

Mark, its been a while and I forget, for 1.2 you replaced pages with groups. Are you looking to add pages later on or did you choose that groups was a better choice for your extention?

Hey Greg. Pages will be added later (maybe in 1.3).

  Attachments

Yep, as David mentioned Pages has been postponed to 1.3 because Groups seems to be more critical and it is a testament to what amazing apps we could build with Groups

Quick question !

Do you plan on adding these features to Groups's discussions : Tags, featured groups (where is it gone ?) Polls.

Yep definitely but perhaps not now as we're still deciding which extension to use as our global unifying tagging system

Forget about "featured groups", found it back. But still, any plan on addind polls, tags to group's discussions and annoncement ? Polls in general are much appreciated tool.

Oh, and still having in mind to be able to desactivate individual app filter ? ;-)

Hello Christopher,

The built-in discussion app for groups is actually pretty powerful already and it can almost do pretty identical stuffs in EasyDiscuss too. As mentioned in my post earlier, it has the DNA of EasyDiscuss But it's going to be pretty tricky to actually get EasyDiscuss to be in a group (Although it's definitely possible) but just thinking along the lines of the category ACL and the group types.

Thanks Mark. OK, I think that I understand. Are you are saying that the EasySocial Groups are not linked to the Joomla ACL so maintaining the privacy of EasyDiscuss discussions would be difficult?

I'll have a play with discussions before deciding whether to try to bridge the two, but if we do transition to group discussions, will I be able to move my existing EasyDiscuss discussions to EasySocial?

Thanks Again
Chris

Hello Christopher,

Not really, but the problem is the access in Groups is different than the access that is configured in EasyDiscuss category. For instance, how would you relate discussions created for groups in EasyDiscuss because the access for both these 2 items are actually different

As for moving discussions from EasyDiscuss to EasySocial, I am not too sure how possible is that unless there's an identifier that determines the discussion belongs to specific groups?

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the reply. If I understand you correctly, the only way is to do what I currently do with JomSocial. I relate a JomSocial group to a Joomla group and then using a plugin, add and remove people to the Joomla group as they are added to JomSocial group. It's not perfect but is usually works. I think that it was you who initially proposed this approach.

Does EasySocial trigger events as members are added to and removed from a group? If so then I could write a plugin to do the same and then perhaps use a custom field to map the EasyDiscuss discussions to the EasySocial group, or just use the Joomla ACL to look up which discussions are allowed or available for a particular group.

I'm not sure what to do about the groups activity streams.

Am I way off base here or does this seem workable? I have to solve the problem one way or the other... Our users (group members) would be very annoyed (to say the least) if they lost access to the thousands of private threads they have already created.

Thanks Again
Chris

Hello Christopher,

Hm, if you want to go ahead with this approach, that could probably work too but in my opinion, you should start moving your discussions to the native Group Discussions in EasySocial. It would make more sense that way.

Anyway EasySocial does fire an event when a member joins / leaves a group and you can go ahead with the existing approach that you have but since the discussions in EasySocial Groups is pretty powerful on it's own, maybe you should start looking at moving...

Ok... I will start by taking a look at the EasySocial Group Discussions and then try to move the existing discussions over. I've been having some trouble getting RC1 installed so I've not seen it yet (nor have I even taken a good look at the existing EasySocial for this particular project because it did not have groups) . Do EasySocial Group discussions support the answer voting thing?

Hi Mark,

I guess, it is not normal for you guys to have Beta-4 and then RC-4 for a release. Do you see ES 1.2 converging anytime soon?
