EasyBlog 5 Early Access

EasyBlog 5 Early Access

We've told you guys that EasyBlog 5 Alpha is coming, didn't we? :)

We have prepared a demo site to test out EasyBlog 5 Alpha before we release the installer for your own personal testing. You might want to check out these cool feats in the demo page while you're waiting for the installer.

The New Drag and Drop Blocks

Just like how we've shared with you guys before, we have the drag and drop blocks for the new EasyBlog 5 composer. You can add 'elements' into your blog post by using the drag-n-drop-blocks in our unique EasyBlog 5 composer. A very easy feature which is not found in any Joomla's blogging component. The best part is that we've built this from scratch, making this one of THE unique feature in EasyBlog.

 b2ap3_thumbnail_ted-drag-1.png

First, we drag a block into the content. For this, I choose to drag the "TED" blocks into our blog post.

b2ap3_thumbnail_ted-drag-2.png

Once it's dropped, the blocks will expand; each content is unique to the blocks. For "TED", you can put in your URL and click on the button.

b2ap3_thumbnail_ted-drag-3.png

That's it! You can continue to post according to your heart's content. Go ahead and play with the rest of the blocks here.

Quick Post is Quicker Than Ever

We have designed EasyBlog 5 to ensure that the quick post feature helps user to post a quick update without jeopardizing the looks and feel of our component.

b2ap3_thumbnail_quickpost-1.png

Each post types is in tabs, which is easily accessed by blogger. Quick post has just become easier and beautiful with EasyBlog.

Advanced Media Manager

As a blogger, I always wishes that everything is on my posting screen. I hate having to wait for the page to load just so that I can upload a photo into my post. With EasyBlog 5, not only you can drag and drop blocks and photos into your post, you can manage your media right inside of your posting page.

b2ap3_thumbnail_media-manager.png

No other Joomla's blogging tools have such an easy media manager built inside of their component. Managing media is now easier with EasyBlog 5.

Redefined Text Editor

Another cool feature that you might want to play around with is our very own 'Text Editor'. We have truly redefined 'text editing' with this new feature :

b2ap3_thumbnail_text-editor.png

You can adjust multiple links, subscripts a text, resize a text using sliders, and much more. Text editing is now easier than ever. You don't have to go through the codes just to fix any font's issue; you can do it right in the text editor pane on the right side.

Under The Hood Features

There are some under the hood features that can only be tested once you've obtained EasyBlog 5 as it requires backend accesses. Some of the features are the ability to set a different theme for each categories, revamped statistics, and so much more.

What Is An Alpha Version?

In a software release's life cycle, an 'Alpha' version is the first testing stage where the software is released for testing processes. Though the software's features are done, major tests are done in order to ensure that there are no bugs that might break the software. Having said that, EasyBlog 5 Alpha will contain bugs that might be minor, or major. We've tested it on our local beforehand and currently we have not found any bugs that might results in data losses. However, for safety precautions, we highly suggest that, once you've received your EasyBlog 5 Alpha, to refrain yourself from installing it on your live site.

The team suggest for you to install it on an isolated installation and try out all the features.

Invitation For The Alpha Version

There's so much feature in EasyBlog 5, it is impossible for me to write everything in one blog post. Even with the demo site, you won't even get the gist of the real power behind EasyBlog 5. However, we cannot let EasyBlog 5 Alpha out for free, we would have to ensure that only active license-holders are able to get their privilege on testing EasyBlog 5 Alpha first.

With this, we are offering you a whopping 35% discount for renewals. This is to ensure that only previous license holders are able to get their hands on EasyBlog 5. New license holders will also have the access, but sadly we won't be able to offer any discount code. :(

The coupon code for the 35% renewal is

EASYBLOG5ALPHA

We are only offering this coupon code for 24 hours starting from the time this blog post is published. I seriously suggest for all EasyBlog owners to renew your license now and take advantage of the coupon code; not only you'll renew at a lesser price, you will also obtain EasyBlog 5 Alpha. This is seriously an offer that you have no choice but to accept, or you can drool while others are enjoying their EasyBlog 5 Alpha privilege. The choice is yours.

Welcome to the new Joomla blogging technology.

Great news! Cool discount. Is it not 1st april joke? -)

Main feature now for blog platform is mobile app.
Does EasyBlog 5 have it? (For example Wordpress app at GooglePlay)

Glad the Alpha is hear! I'm going to be looking closely over time but on the surface it feels like a great work space. I'm really happy to see how easy it is to save as template, it's going to help ensure consistent, robust, and appealing blogs entries for sites with many contributors. More substantive post after I get further in but CONGRATS on this milestone it's real!

BTW where does the team want Alpha reports?

yes Eileen i have the same feeling with all those Composer Buttons and settings! for admins it's like a holiday in Disney Land but i'm sure for my non technical Blogger it will much confusing!
@mark i hope we can hide all those settings for normal Blogger and provide them a simple Default Template with less possible variations!? i need for my Blogger the easiest and simpliest settings of Composer!

Hi Mark,

This is exciting I love the drag-n-drop blocks it's so easy to use. Is the coupon code good for renewal only or that includes new account? I have a new client that would still need to purchase EasyBlog.

When can we post bug inputs?

I just could not find the way to exit the editor once my post was finished. Its published but could not exit composer. Might just be me.

In addition, when going into the media manager and selecting shared media, I could not return to the main media options/menu.

Also, Will there be the possibility in the media manager to see all your albums? That option is currently not shown.

But it still looks nice

Not sure I understand the confusion or worry here: SI states in their blog quote: " ...we would have to ensure that only active license-holders are able to get their privilege on testing EasyBlog 5 Alpha first...."
So my understanding is that as long as you have an active license you are fine to go... once its released. They wont release it to people that dont have an active license which sounds very reasonable to me.

Just trying to help to clarify to share my interpretation...

Cheers!

It would be nice if the " select a template " had an option that allowed the user to either select a predefined template from the site ( as it is in the demo ) OR they could create their own template that ONLY THEY have exclusive use of.

Mark:
I am excited for EasyBlog 5. My question is about the great renewal discount code. My current subscription expires in November of this year. If I renew now, will it be added from November? Or will I lose the 8 months that I already have paid for? I don't mind taking advantage of the discount to help invest in you and you company as long as I am not losing out on what I have already paid.

Tested and not really sure what to think about it...
Probably the issues (quite few) I encountered are because it is still an alpha release, wait and see...
First questions:
The composer is nice on a 27" screen but what can we expect on smaller screens, tablets or microblog on phones?
Is the composer a compulsory editor or is it possible to choose a different editor per blogger preference?
And last:
Do you offer a valid renewal discount code on bundles as well?

- The place holder "Enter your text here ..." does not disappear when clicking the textarea box. No one would actually want the text as part of their content.

- Really long paste jobs seem to break scrolling (making it impossible to edit above content). To test this, copy all of the text/images from a story I wrote (I know, might take a few seconds due to all the content).

- The textarea can break completely not allowing me to edit the placeholder. For some unknown reason after experimenting with the editor, leaving it, and coming back later it's no longer allowing me to add text (this is due to the main textbox not activating, in other words it cannot detect a user click). I cleared my cache (FireFox) and even swapped to Google Chrome and had the same issue.

I'm not too worried about it considering that this is an alpha release. Most of the other features were working pretty well. Anyways, be sure to enjoy some sunshine after the final release and take a breather. You guys earned it.

would you also like the fact with Media manager size select if you have a Multiblogger System? im sure it ends in a totally mess if each blogger is able to use a different Image size or Font size or whatever! i still think all these extra settings should be hide by Default within in a Multiblogger system! Also the right Settings area take a lot of Space within Composer!

I see your point, and giving the option that this is hidden or shown would be great indeed. But I would definitely use and like this, because I might need an image previously uploaded but not in full size so it is good if I can choose one of the available size.

I have to agree with you René (see my own post below )
At present time I have a feeling EB5 will be a VERY professional Blog extension to suit very demanding Bloggers
But if we can choose the main editor in the settings or better per user(profile) basis we have a simple editor again

Yep, thats it !
Why not have blogger profiles a bit like ES to select options (like the editor)/ACLs to have e.g.: noobs - experienced- pro bloggers???

MARK ???

At present time, tough the composer is "cool" "fancy" and trendy... I do not like it at all:
- You have to grab blocks for anything you want to do, even to insert a readmore !!
- All and any simple actions need more clics than before !!
This is NOT KISS at all ( - at present buggy alpha release time)

I challenge every member to write a copy of this blog post like I did it here on the alpha test site:EasyBlog 5 Early Access

It took me approximately 40 minutes (icons not displaying in text formatting and the very very - very -annoying bottom center toolbar always in the way when editing the bottom block AAARRRgghh!)
Then I did it in less than 5 minutes on the actual version EB4 with my beloved WYSIWYG editor
Try it for yourself....

I am really not against this composer and without any doubt many many members will love it

But PLEASE leave the existing option to select the editor of our choice.

That being said, who knows... I will continue to test/report and I might adopt the stable release of the composer

But EB5 is not only a matter editor and I spotted it will bring us more awaited features
...wireframe theme??? and maybe more updated themes???
...some layout improvements on categories and bloggers lists... nice
...consistent toolbar for all SI components ???

I am much more curious about the new admin interface UE and possible configurations/options

There is a settings which you can choose to use other editors on the site if you do not want to use the new composer Further to that, EasyBlog also respects the author's editor settings so I don't see this as an issue at all.

For instance, we ran a test where we requested an end user to align the photo to the right in a paragraph of text. They struggled and have no idea what they are doing at all.

So nearly a year ago Stack Ideas politely informed me that if I renewed my EasyBlog license I would have early access to the "New EasyBlog 5 Beta" ? Here we are nearly 11 months later and still no beta (currently an alpha demo site). So the question is this: My subscription will probably expire before the beta is released, so will Stack Ideas keep to there promise and let me have access to this beta without an active subscription?

I know this is an alpha, and this is not the place for feature request but I feel it more like some kind of consistency that needs to be done. So I ask,

I've spent some more time at the demo site --- phenomenal the more time I spend the more I appreciate how your iterative development yielded great results (awaiting Alpha access for more learning on back-end structuring and capabilities).

Please consider enabling collaboration among EB5 bloggers by allowing authors to enable editing and viewing access with finer granularity than just Joomla-based ACL such as: on a per-user bases, or perhaps by enabling EB5 authors to select one of their ES groups (i.e. I click on my ES "Grade 5 Teacher Team" to automatically add edit access to all the teachers on my team --- a great way to encourage EB5 sites to also use ES).

Why?

Community-collaborative blogging is fun, a great way to network, keeps things interesting, there's strength in numbers, you can easily increase exposure and for Stack Ideas your users can integrate this community blogging capability to extend and leverage their ES community. Indeed, when you ask most bloggers what they like best about blogging or why they blog, the answer you hear most often is that they love the blogging community. Collaborating with other bloggers is a favorite way to feel like part of any blogging community.

EB5 with the new/updated features in templating, revisions history UX, media composer, and others will bring greater opportunities for collaborative content development. This is particularly true for ES-based membership sites. Just one example would be in education where a social based site would naturally open opportunities for collaborative content development among students working on projects, teachers collaborating on project assignment sheets, parents working on parent-teacher-association updates on meetings. For this particular industry, you can see how Google Drive's ability to assign access rights to individuals has had great results in encourage usage in that industry.

looks great. too bad the text editing options did not hover over it and inline like medium & the new wordpress frontend editing tool. That is probably going to be the new default way of blog writing. I think the whole effects is necessary.

- If you had a table, when changing the number of rows or columns, the table disappear in the blog post form
- Are tabs limited to 6?

another thought, the post explorer. I get that it might populate with the available EB articles. It would be great if it could populate also with J Articles and maybe with an extendable system where admin would be able to write a handler to populate with other contents to be added (for instance JReviews items, K2 articles, SEBLOD…).

So when you click on the post explorer, you might have this hierarchy:
- EB Posts
- category 1
- category 2
- post 1
- post 2
- J Articles
- category 1
- category 2
- post 1
- post 2
- JReviews
- category 1
- category 2
- post 1
- post 2

Of course, you would only write the handler of J Articles and other people would write the file to add in a specific location.

Question: how do you deal with possible time out and disconnect when writing long articles?

Let me explain. Joomla has a long history of invalid token issues that may cause loss of articles upon approval, so some techniques were developed to prevent such frustration such as: once article is done, before hitting "publish" if I have a suspicion, then I switch to source code of the article and copy/paste in a text editor. So that, if I'm logged out, I just have to paste it in the editor, and...

So that, if I'm logged out, I just have to paste it in the editor, and I'm good.

I don't see any "toggle source code" button on EB5. Is the only option the autosave, will it appear next?

In fact, I'm asking this because I just wrote a test article on your test website… but as I hit publish, it keeps loading… but nothing changes… so I know it will be lost (though it might be saved in the admin, but since I can't access it I don't know!)

Hi Sébastien, there's "keep-alive" built-in which periodically pings your site to prevent session timeout. There's also "auto-save" to periodically save your work as newer draft revisions.

"Toggle Source Code" button will not be available for Composer editor to prevent user tampering because we require blocks to follow a certain html structure. However, there is a "HTML" block for you to insert your own custom html snippets.

My client just renewed her Easyblog license and I do not want to install the new software because of the customizations that we did to the blog-Is there a simple setting that can be modified to show that the software has been renewed without a complete re-install?

Hey Lori,

Not really sure what you mean by to "show that the software has been renewed" but do you mean the version number? Unfortunately right now it's not possible to customize this but what you could do is to modify the easyblog.xml file at /administrator/components/com_easyblog/easyblog.xml to update the version number
