EasyBlog 5.1 Beta Is Available Now!

EasyBlog 5.1 Beta Is Available Now!

Phew! After almost 4 months of revamping and restructuring EasyBlog, the team and I are extremely excited to announce the availability of EasyBlog 5.1 Beta.

To be honest, this release was probably one of the most challenging release for us because refactoring 6 years worth of codes and revamping the user experience in months were really taxing and stressful.

Good things come in small packages

For those who are not aware of the features that was posted earlier, you may find them here. Actually, I have missed out on 2 important points in my previous post but I honestly feel that these are worth mentioning. In EasyBlog 5.1, we have successfully reduced the launcher installer file size from 1.1MB to just under 250KB

Apart from the launcher installer size being massively reduced, we have also shaved off almost 10MB from the full installer. Reducing the full installer size from 21MB to just under 10MB with EasyBlog 5.1 while maintaining the existing functionality with an extensive lineup of new features to top it off! How crazy is that?

Joomla 3.0 support

In order for us to be able to reduce the file size of EasyBlog, we had to make a choice to either drop support for Joomla 1.6 / 2.5 or continue supporting Joomla 1.6 / 2.5. Since Joomla 1.6 / 2.5 has already reached it's end of life in December 2014, we have decided to drop support for Joomla 1.6 / 2.5 from EasyBlog 5.1. In short, EasyBlog 5.1 will only be compatible from Joomla 3.x onwards.

Still a Beta release

As always, we strongly do not recommend that installing the Beta release on a live site. Instead, you should install it on a staging or development site first. Although we spent weeks testing it, there are just too many possibilities that couldn't be covered, especially conflicts with external extensions or plugins.

You may download the Beta release by clicking on the button below and do note that the download access are only for active EasyBlog subscribers.

Attention Bug Squad

We are doing something slightly different from any of our previous Beta testings. For this time round, all bug reports or feedback will be gathered on our dedicated forum section here. That way it will be much easier for our team to monitor every single issue posted or found in the Beta release. Happy testing!

Will there be a possibility to protect the pdf's in EB 5.1?

Hm, not sure if that is possible because locking the PDF contents would be dependent on the PDF source itself and not the HTML codes used to embed the PDF viewer.

I think you'll have 2 options here:

1. Protect the PDF source

or

2. Password protect your post altogether.

Hi all.

Sounds great! Is there a roadmap for release? Any date? I ask because I just started a new website project for release at end of April. Thus it would be great to start with EB 5.1 so I could also help to find bugs.

Cheers
Ronny

Hello Ronny,

To be honest, we don't have an exact timeframe for this yet but the more bug reports we get, the more stable it gets and we get to push it out quicker

Thank you Jean, and hope that you are loving the new workflows too. We have spent weeks revamping that 2 buttons and making it as least sophisticated yet powerful

Quick postings are still available in 5.1 just like 5.0. Our aim in 5.1 is to revamp the composing experience and so far, it seems like people are loving the new composer

An "Anonymous" blog option would be nice. Sometimes, my users prefer to blog anonymously.

Great job on the size. Will there be a reduction in js/css file sizes too?

With EasyBlog 5.1, there is a new virtual author alias which can be used to "proxy" an authors name. Perhaps this would be useful to your authors.

Yes, there is massive reductions on the scripts. As we still rely on bootstrap 3, the css file size is almost the same (We didn't make the jump to drop bootstrap as it will affect too many sites with custom themes in the 5.x branch).

Moving forward, we do plan to drop bootstrap 3 and come up with our very own smaller framework

I build all my custom websites based on Bootstrap. If you drop bootstrap and come up with even a smaller framework, it means my website will have 2 css frameworks resulting in heavier css files.

I would prefer an option to choose between the inbuilt bootstrap from my template or your framework in the EB admin panel.

Hello Ningning,

Even if EasyBlog uses bootstrap, we need to render our own version of Bootstrap because:

1. Some Joomla template clubs modifies / alters the behavior of Bootstrap (I don't know why but it seems it has to do with the line height / font styles)

2. Some Joomla template clubs renders Bootstrap 2 instead of 3

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I feel you could use an override but yeah, some template providers using BS 2 is beyond me! Don't know why they still do it.

For simpler and lighter css frameworks, I usually use Skeleton Framework but yeah, whatever is comfortable or better. Looking forward

Hm, not entirely sure what do you mean here but you don't have to purchase the upgrades. As long as you have an active subscription, you can always download 5.1 when it is stable

There are some sites which are still running on Joomla 2.5 unfortunately but we would strongly encourage site owners to make the jump.

There was just one item that I would LOVE to see and hoping either it's in the works or implemented and just haven't found it yet.
This in regards to HwdMediShare, images & videos insert capabilities.

In core Joomla hwdmedia created an icon which we can simply click to insert.
I have just been taking repetitive code and just replacing it with the correct id#.

For example,
{media id=88,layout=solo} for solo media.
{media id=88,layout=documentation} for image to open in lightbox

Is it...

Is it possible to squeeze this under media, embeddables, or even misc?

Or is there a better resolve coming shortly, such as having it under "media" then have it under "places" under "all users"?

Other than that, I am liking the updates.
Great Job Team!!!!

Hello Ulysses,

How does HWDMediaShare adds those buttons? Are they linked to the standard editors in Joomla? If that is the case, I believe if you are using the WYSIWYG editors, it would also work fine since contents in EasyBlog would feed through standard Joomla content plugins.

I do think you should try the new media manager in EasyBlog We have gone through over 5 years of media manager revamp and to be honest, we felt that the new media manager in 5.1 is definitely the way to go.

You are correct Mark, if I change the editor in EasyBlog to Editor-JCE I can have the hwdmediashare function and retrieve images/videos that were placed into hwdmediashare.

Of course, that defies the purpose of utilizing your fantastic editor for EasyBlog.

I guess I will have to tinker with the media functionalities in the Beta version and take it from there.
It would be nice to remove as many additional programs running in the background, if I could..

Keeping fingers crossed and...

Thanks for understanding Ulysses, perhaps in the future we could consider adding a new HWD block to embed HWD items but do try out the new media manager It's extremely easy for your users to embed items on the post.

I understand that the new beta is opening a bigger page to edit in, and I like it better than the modal-looking windows that popped up before. The way it works for a NEW Post is good.

Is there a way in the new beta to turn off the "open in a new tab" option for an already existing post?

  1.    Scott Lavelle

Hello Scott,

Hm, not entirely sure if I understand you here. By default they should all edit on the same page without opening any new tabs. Perhaps there is some edit links which we missed out but feel free to post this under the beta testing area and we'll look into this.

Ideally, all links that renders the editor should open on the same tab.
