CometChat Revisited - More enhancement

While you guys are checking out Wanderers and EasyBlog 5's teaser, I would like to write a short entry about CometChat.

We've blogged about CometChat sometime last year. This year, their updates just gets more awesome. All messages in CometChat and EasySocial are synchronised. This feature will only makes your EasySocial site a better social networking site as compared to the rest of the site. CometChat truly rips the second last wall that stands between your user (the first wall being the Internet itself!). They can talk to each other in real-time instead of using traditional 'private messages'. 

Your users will automatically logged in to CometChat as soon as they are logged in to your EasySocial site. With user friend's list PLUS the "Who's Online" status will makes it easier for your users to browse through their lists and see which friends are available to chat. CometChat also integrates with user profile's info and avatar. 

Did I mention that CometChat synchronises with EasySocial's inbox messages? :)

Well, I will certainly acknowledge that the EasySocial integration has been buggy since 5.3.... in fact, I have had to revert back to the integration.php file from 5.2. However, they have always been nice to me in support.... but they are slow, I will say that. It can take days to get a response at times.... I am still waiting for a response for my ticket from yesterday.

That said, having tested ArrowChat, CometChat, jBolo, jChatSocial and one the JomSocial had a few years ago before...

In many ways it is fantastic, but it does need to be optimized further. Where they win is customization and features...

However, I do have two complaints: It slows down your site more than others and on my site I have had problems with it breaking JS on my site for some site visitors. (mostly on Windows)

I was looking at CometChat and JChatSocial for chat options Jannik, what was the issue with JChat for you?

jChatSocial loads nice and fast. But for me the biggest complaint was that if I had multiple tabs open or if I was logged in on multiple browsers I should show up several times in the chat... so I couldnt switch device mid conversation... and people would write to me, and I would not notice that they had written until several hours later, because I wasnt looking at that tab or that device.

Also, there is no option for hosted in jChatSocial... meaning more stress on my server.

Another thing...

jChatSocial loads nice and fast. Another thing I didn't fully like was the way the windows load in the middle of your screen because they are resizable and movable. It is a cool feature, but I would have liked more control of placement.

I agree 100% with Jannik... we have to agree that without being the best, its the less worse.
such feature has been requested for a long time but I don't see a near future where this solution would be done in-house.

Thank you for the reply Jannik, appreciated, I will ask JChat for a response, they may have solved some of the problems with their latest updates.

I look forward to the day when other products that we need match the superb quality and support from Stackideas but appreciate it is not something that will happen soon and anything Mark and his team do in house will always be better, so 'EasyChat' is a primary option no matter how long we wait!

Which is the largest site using easy social? What type of server they are using? How will this affect the page load speed since PHP is already slow compared to Java?

What is the realistic bottleneck user number for easy social?

Please do not say that we should host is on an IBM supercomputer to get realistic page load times. I need real life example.

We have sites as large as Date.com and SocialGo.com use CometChat. Although they do not use EasySocial, the CometChat core remains the same across platforms. I wish I could say there is a great chat option anywhere, but like others have said, it's still a race of the "lesser of evils." My experience with CometChat was mixed. My users like the interface, but it slowed my site down to the point of almost non-operational (I was on a large dedicated server). I started using the cometservice to try to offload some of this, but it didn't really help as much as expected and because it's costed on number of messages instead of concurrent users, it got...

I have a large site with 17k+ members. I have to have a hosted chat solution because of this and am willing to pay for it, but it needs to really, REALLY work. Fast, easy and without crashing my site. So far, I have not found this. I spend more time messing around with chat than any other component.

If you face load issues, it usually only requires a few configuration tweaks that need to be made. what happens when you have more than more person in a conversation in easysocial, will a chat room be made automatically since cometchat uses chatrooms instead of a "group chat" as such?

There already is a blog update on ES 1.3 and the development is complete. They are testing it internally right now and intend to release public beta version very soon

Third party blog updates are always relevant. Any support for stackideas products by third parties is appreciated.

I have used cometchat and i was satisfied with it, until i purchase the white labeled phone app, it was bugy, slow, and outdated, i thought it was under heavy development but updates were never there.

For me the chat is good but has a lot to improve.
For my software that breaks every time I update my site, not good at all.
My time is worth money.
Customers give it a try, two and three. If this continues, look for alternatives or have a website with sotware payment choose free sotware

I will not think bad. But, they may have an interest in that no mistakes every day.
Thus they support paying customers. There is free software that updates perfect. Examples Kunena, K2, etc. .. customer paid to be better than the free software.
We can not be every day in support forums waiting for the savior.

Thought I'd chime in. I've been using CometChat with EasySocial for a few months now and it works flawlessly. I tried the new plugin and it syncs well with inbox. I'd like to thank both ES & CC team for making this happen.

We paid $200+ for CometChat and found it slowed page load times to 10+ seconds. As soon as we removed it, things were back to normal. CometChat is a good idea, but man it is resource intensive. I would recommend testing a demo version with your site before buying

I am sorry to hear that. Looks like CometChat was not optimized correctly on your site. When configured correctly, CometChat will have no noticeable affect on page load. It is loaded similar to how Google Analytics is loaded, right at the end of the page and once loaded, it is always cached. Synced to me only when cometchat is written to cometchat. These messages are also read in easysocial then. But when I send in easysocial to cometchat, the message is not displayed in cometchat
