A lot of time, effort and resources go into creating a community. You are the sole person responsible for managing every aspect of your online community of members, and the life of the community largely depends on you and what you do.

What if you could not manage your community for some reason?

Whether it be a major health issue or some other reason, what would your members of your community do if you were not able to manage the community?

Active successful communities depend on the Community Manager in many ways. As a solo community manager you are a Jack of All Trades.

A Recent Event Got Me Thinking A Lot About This
While I did not have to worry about a live active community, I recently encountered a situation where I had an accident in late April that kept me from my EasySocial based site in mid May. As I lay in the hospital many things wandered through my mind. For the past few months I have not been able to do much on my online community. If I had launched it late last year and had built up the membership, my accident could have had an impact on an active community.

This got me thinking about what other solo community have as backup plans.
Many questions come up if the solo community manager were unable to manage the community.

What if I had hundreds or thousands of members of a very active online community?
What would I do to see that the online community could continue without me?

If I had launched and had an active community it would have been a disaster in the making. Fortunately, I didn't have to worry because I hadn't launched the site yet. As a result of my accident, I am now working on plans to have them put in place so in the event of any future accident or event, that a series of steps involved in community management can be relied on by someone else to manage the community. I will put this in place before I launch my site later this summer.

This could happen (I hope it doesn't - but things happen) - Do you have a backup plan in place
As a solo online community manager do you have a contingency backup manager plan in the event of an accident or unforeseen event where you could not manage your community?

Who would manage the community?
Could you depend on some of the active members to manage the community in event of your absence or inability to type and interact with members?

I sure hope that this does not happen to any of you, but would if it did happen?

Perhaps this thread can serve as a basis for some serious discussions on community management, and what would be the best form of action in the event of such a thing happening.

I hope you will add your ideas and suggestions to this discussion.
