Sorting behavior with frontpage layout and category filter set to 1 category

Hi,
I have a menu item with frontpage layout and the category filter set to 1 category. If I use the sort (latest/popular/title), it pulls in posts from all the categories rather than sorting the selected category. Is this the expected behavior? Is there any way to sort just the selected category?
