Removing 'Name' leaving only username in registration

A couple of people have mentioned they are uncomfortable listing their name. Real names arn't required on my site so I would like to remove it.. however when I remove it from the workflow I am unable to save it (if HAS to be required, could it be hidden and automatically use the username instead?)
