Messages truncate after special characters

If someone uses a special character in a message, it truncates the message after the character. The ones I have seen this with so far are < and >.

For instance:
"having a hard time finding shippers because FedEx can't do true Priority Overnight ( <20 hours ) from the lower 48 to Alaska. "

Becomes
"having a hard time finding shippers because FedEx can't do true Priority Overnight ( "
