Incorrect username/password

When a user mistakenly submits the wrong details, the login doesn’t do anything but clear the screen of that attempt, which is confusing some users.
Should there be an error message saying attempt failed? They do get that AFTER successfully logging in, but no info as to how to resolve the issue while logging in.
Is this a Joomla issue rather than an ES one?
