How to define custom fields that they has to be filled out during registration?

Hi,

I defined some additional mandatory custom fields for my users. They seem to work fine if the user is going to maintaine his profile after registration and login. I want to change this that new users are asked to fill them out during the registration process. Where is my mistake?
