How to alter the user profile & payplans subscription when a new user joins?

When a user joins the site they should automatically join as a Basic User with a free for ever subscription.

I had created a test user and when they joined they were automatically assigned a Basic User but their subscription automatically became Premium Forever (something I just use for specific friends).

Where do I change this automatic allocation?
