Also - I want to enable recaptcha to prevent hacking - was hacked this week... existing tutorial seems out of date...

I have added api keys to recaptcha app, and tried to add custom field to registered user profile type - unsuccessfully - it will not save any changes... revrts to previous condition without any error messages - permission issue?
