Groups: Empty menu appears when non-group members logged in front-end

If I'm logged in as a user, but not a member of a group, and go to http://mysite.com/groups... I get a menu icon (the "..." appear when I mouse over the group cover pictures.. when I select it an empty box appears.

I understand this is the menu that does appear if the group owner / admin is logged in, but can it be hidden if the scenario I describe here applies? (A logged in person but not a member of the group)
