Facebook avatar not synched

When a new user registers (we use JFBConnect) with social media such as Facebook, their Avatar is brought over to the site, but it seems as if it has not been assigned since it does not show. The default system avatar remains published. Then if you go into 'change avatar' in ES, you notice that the Facebook avatar is actually there, so you select and save and then it works.

This has been happening for a while now, new users seem to all have the default avatar, not great.

Can you please advice how we can resolve this?
