EasySocial 'story update' stream item with photo attachment disappears from front end

When posting a story update (using quick post box at the top of the stream) and choosing a photo attachment, after submitting the post you can see the entry in the stream. However, if you navigate away from the page and try to go back to the stream, that post has disappeared. The photo attached to the story update does get uploaded to the Story album, but the stream entry is no longer visible on front end. If I look at the backend stream, I can see the stream entry and content and confirm that it is not archived.

If I post a story update without a photo, it stays in the stream throughout the site and everything works as expected.
