Custom fields in different Profile-Types

Hi everybody,

I am testing out the different profile-types and the custom fields.
Is it correct, that custom fields are ALWAYS connected to a single profile-type and there is no way to create a custom field that is valid for all profiles at once?

Reason for asking is:
I want to use jPayplans and give the paying users a different profile type. jPayplans can move the users automaticaly into a different profile-type when they sign in for a plan. And move them back to the default when the subscription expires.

I now wonder what is happening with the data. Is there a way to built a "general" custom field, so when the user is moved to another profile-type the data will stay?
