Some progress updates on Komento 3

Some progress updates on Komento 3

Phew, 2016 has been a roller coaster year for most of us! With the recent release of EasySocial 2.0 and many other apps, the team have also been working on Komento 3.0 and EasyBlog 5.1!

It has been almost 3 years now since the first release of Komento 1.0. It was available to download for free until we posted the announcement here. While some of you don't agree with our move, we needed to take this step to move ahead.

Komento has always been an ideal extension for adding comments on your Joomla! site. In fact, it is one of the best commenting solutions for Joomla with a super awesome UI! We have taken another huge leap again with Komento 3.0. This time by refactoring the code base and also trimming down tons of fats from the extension. Read to learn more about what to expect for Komento 3.0

Our priority for Komento 3 was to ensure that the code base are updated to have a very similar code base to the rest of our extensions and of course to boost the performance of the extension. That's not just it, we have also revamped and restructured the entire comments layout to give it a more modern touch and also improved on the user experience too.

Massive Performance Improvements

In terms of our javascript files, Komento 3.0 is on an insane diet with almost 200kb of fats (300kb if jQuery is decoupled) being stripped off from Komento 2.0. It no longer requires Foundry just like the rest of our extensions.

On a site with jQuery decoupled and gzip compressions, Komento 3.0 script files are only 90kb! How cool is that! Just by installing Komento 3.0, you will immediately feel the speed punch! For the guys that worry about performance, this is definitely going to be one of the best feature in Komento 3.0.

On top of all the client side optimizations, we have also performed tons of performance improvements on the database and php scripts as well. Overall, these improvements are staggering!

Web Push Notifications

Komento 3.0 will be able to integrate with OneSignal out of the box. If you have not heard about them yet, OneSignal provides a free web push service for your web sites. It delivers real time notifications directly to the user's browser even if they don't open your site. Your visitors would get instant notification whenever a new comment is made on the site.

More Anti-spam Delights

For many years now, we have been getting hit hard with spammers and we have been getting really tired with this. Therefore we have now optimized the anti spam tools which are included with Komento 3.0. These new improvement allows you to train Akismet for spams and also false positive reports. By introducing a new "Spam list" filter at the back end allows you to sift through probable spam comments easily and gives you better control over spams.

Apart from that, we have also been scouting for 3rd party anti spam tools and found Cleantalk. Cleantalk provides a similar anti spam service that is similar to Akismet but it provides greater spam detection when compared to Akismet.

I am pretty sure that with Komento 3.0, your site would be almost 99% spam free if integrated with these awesome and cool anti spam services.

Less Is More

Throughout these years, we have learnt that to offer more is to offer less. One of the biggest hurdle in all our extensions was the sea of settings and configuration. This is the same for versions prior to Komento 2.x. It had a massive amount of settings and also integration settings as well. All of these are unnecessary and does more harm than good.

With Komento 3.0, we have merged these settings into a single settings page and we have also removed over 100 different settings that we felt was unnecessary clutter in the extension. Komento 3.0 will work on the site out of the box with close to zero configuration.

The look-and-feel of the administration interface is now much more aligned and unified to the rest of our extensions. If you own any of our extensions, they will look very identical and the learning curve is much more minimal now. The overall administration of Komento 3.0 also contains more admin goodies including e-mail editors, theme file editors which allows you to easily customize these files.

Redesigned Themes & Restructured Theme files

One of the biggest issue with Komento, is that it contains too many smaller theme files which makes customisation extremely painful as you need to override tons of files. With Komento 3.0, we have also trimmed the theme files and a lot of unnecessary and redundant HTML codes are also removed.

On the themes department, we have re-designed most of the existing themes in Komento and it will be rebranded as the following:

  • Wireframe (Will retain it's name just like the rest of our extensions)
  • Dark (Will retain it's name just like the rest of our extensions)
  • Outline (Known previously as kuro)
  • Vortex (Known previously as minimo)
  • Elegant (Known previously as freso)
  • Bubbles (Known previously as bubbo)

Editor Changes

In Komento 3.0, we have now updated the emoticons to use a sprite instead of loading separate images. This is to ensure that the page loads up much faster as opposed to loading these images separately. There is also a new button which allows you to embed Gist code blocks.

The internal syntax highlighter is also replaced with Prism.js which is an awesome syntax highlighting tool.

When Can I Download Komento 3.0?

We are polishing up some of the remaining teething issues and you should expect for an alpha release pretty soon! We are hoping to push out Komento 3.0 stable before Christmas so that most of you could enjoy your holidays while these awesome anti spam services protects your site from any incoming spammers.

Komento 3 Exclusive Offer!

Komento pro plan will now be priced at $45 for 12 months worth of updates and technical support. On top of that, we are also throwing a 30% discount with the coupon code below for the next 3 days as a gesture of appreciation for everyone who has been using Komento.

A bit skeptical about this. Those changes are good (Even if I'm waiting to see what we would loose on the setting side), but the main problem remain for me the architecture used by Komento. I'm a big fan of disqus, that does an efficient job on my mind, with some features I'd like to see on Komento (Admin/Moderator/Other tags, ability to answer people no matter what's the maximum reply level, and a dedicated page where you can see who answered to your comments, to avoid checking each time...

The only reason why I keep Komento is that it needs an external account to be used, and also because there isn't any extension doing the job better than Komento at the moment.

It doesn't mean for me that Komento is a bad extension (It has a lot of cool things), but I'm feeling like I keep it only because other extensions are worst. And from what I saw on boards, those things aren't going to change in the short term, so, is it really worth to renew now? Will you do some iterations after the release of Komento 3.0 that could let me expect one of the problems I talked about could be solved? :/

If you think that we should add features in order for you to renew your subscription, I would certainly suggest you not to because you need to manage your expectations. If you contract a freelancer to add features for you, you would definitely end up paying more than $35 a year.

If it is a legitimate problem and it is a bug defined within our scope, then definitely it is our duty and responsibility to fix. If our support team don't want to fix this for you, write to me :)

I'm already managing my expectations. Komento remains a component I love a lot, even if it lacks some features that would be useful for me. But after all, I posted them on the voice page, and they didn't get any vote, so It's probably a niche need, and that's the game. Of course, I can't pay a freelancer to add some features. They wouldn't be supported on the long term anyway, so... I'll stay with the basic version, and wait to have those features, on Komento or elsewhere ^^

Thanks for the update. Komento is better than disqus because you control/own your comments.

For me 3rd extension support is the main issue. When planning an interactive site I need a commenting system that supports all of my extensions so I can control comments centrally.

Komento is it.

Just in case I missed it, I would like too make a suggestion for some documentation on how to create you own plugin for komento to support a 3rd party component etc.... Perhaps a skeleton piece of code.

Emojis now have standardized UT8 characters, the only caveat is that your system must support UTF8MB4 collation and database connection.

should those not be used instead of your own emoji set? create a button that adds the right character rather than inserting an image.

It would be great if it could work like discuss in that a central account could also log the user IN...then you sell komento as a generic comments thing not just for joomla.
I hope that we can simply drop video urls and stuff in - that would be ace...I am pleased you are looking at commento because I have been toying with getting rid of it in place of discuss. It's the way that discuss allows the commenting to go beyond the domain in question. so that helps seo and traffic.

FB integration... PLEASE. While I love the products SI puts out, it is happening in a huge vacuum. First, FB integration. Not just 1 way, but 2 way integration (especially ED). There is just no way to compete with the convenience of Facebook groups. I am a great case study on this. I am in a small industry and have great influence in that industry, despite that, my once popular social/forum site is a ghost town while brand new FB groups are growing exponentially. I have spoken to many in the group that tell me, despite the forum being a far better platform for organizing discussions, it just isn't convenient. I have seen forums that use a FB integrated commenting, but that isn't it. Full two-way integration (new forum post creates new group post [and vice versa], new FB group replies to that post also post in forum [and vice versa], can be available to public groups only to avoid privacy issues). JFBconnect isn't quite cutting it. I will be forced to shut down the forum soon if SI can't do this.

I agree with most you say kane. People just don't engage my sites via comments if they have to register. Disqus works because they register once then comment everywhere. I think if stackideas had this post discussion before doing the updates they might have looked at this instead of all the 'little stones' what i mean by that is here - http://www.appleseeds.org/big-rocks_covey.htm

Good analogy but in our case study, the biggest rock is the performance issue and not the single sign on. What good does a single sign on do when there are performance issues? :)

You are saying that performance issues stop people getting to the page ? They do not.
Yes performance is very important but its middle sized stone.

Would you publish your case study of user interaction ? I can tell you on my site disqus has more commenting.

If I deeplink into a site and I want to comment I wont bother if I am required to register or submit an email - oh god forbid the latter - there is no trust online. Maybe a little for FB etc or Discuss.

What I am elaborating is that we put performance as our utmost priority compared to extensive features :)

Hi at Stack Ideas,

Sounds good... and I like very much that you have done the layout in a more modern touch and that you also have improved on the user interface.

Also from me - FB integration is need.

Looking forward to the up-coming Komento releases.

hello

Just want to know if i am using easydiscuss with the Content - EasyDiscuss plugin enabled (to add a discussion at the bottom of the article allowing the articles to be linked to EasyDiscuss)

Can i replace the easydiscuss editor with komento so the replies on the articles or blog posts still show up in the threads created in easydiscuss?

Thanks Adam

Unfortunately that is not possible Adam. Komento stores comments in it's own database and it's not possible to configure it to store into EasyDiscuss currently.

Thanks again!

Thanks for your input on this Jean, in Komento 3, there is a dashboard section for moderators / admins.

This is already possible with Komento 3.0 where replies that exceeds "x" amount of replies and also truncation on the comment's length. Look at your comment, it is truncated
