Mobile app for EasySocial and EasyBlog

Mobile app for EasySocial and EasyBlog

EasySocial and EasyBlog has been around for quite some time, and we have been receiving numerous request to create EasySocial and EasyBlog's mobile apps. Though we are more than happy to create one, we can't seem to find the time to study mobile apps prior to creating one. One of our partners, Appcarvers, too the initiative by creating a mobile app for both EasySocial and EasyBlog.

You can now have your very own EasySocial and EasyBlog's mobile apps!

EasySocial Mobile App

The request for EasySocial's mobile app was sent to us since day one of it's release. Appcarvers made a pretty good job at creating one that has nearly all of the feature together. Here are some of the screenshots, taking from my own Andoid mobile phone.

You can use the app to do almost anything that the full desktop version can do; from sharing statuses to upload photos. The app will be using an API key to fetch data from your site; all you need to do is install the API extension on your Joomla site to get it to work.

The app, sized at a merely 2.2MB, is the best apps that you can have if your site is powered by EasySocial. Apart from the vanilla app, AppCarvers also offers the service to customize the app to suits your unique site's theme. These are the things that you can request for customizations :

  1. Custom App Icon
  2. Custom Splash Screen
  3. In built site url. User will not have to key in the site's URL during the login process.
  4. Custom colour scheme.
  5. Help with publishing the app on iTunes and the Google Playstore with your custom content on your own account.
  6. Source code of the app for the subscription period

We highly suggest for you to go for the customization and get your own personalized apps for your EasySocial-powered site.

The current EasySocial app supports these EasySocial features :

  1. Groups
  2. List of friends
  3. Messaging
  4. Photos and Albums
  5. Status updates
  6. Activity stream

Appcarvers will continuously upgrade and update their apps; you will get the latest updates as long as you have an active subscription with them. It's a cool app and worth investing into, especially if you're targeting mobile users.

Get EasySocial Mobile App

The Blog App, EasyBlog's mobile app

Just like EasySocial, we were bombarded with the request to build EasyBlog's app since it's first day of release, with the request sky-rocketed during the EasyBlog 5 launch. Our friends at Appcarvers created EasyBlog mobile apps which is as awesome as their EasySocial's mobile app. Check out these screenshots :

Just like EasySocial's mobile app, The Blog App is available for free in both Google Play Store and Apple Appstore. However, there's a slight difference; for the free version, the app is limited to these functions :

  1. Search blogs.
  2. Sort blog entries by either using rich list or card layouts.
  3. Read blogs.
  4. Share blog's content.
  5. Subscribe to blogs that the user likes.

Composing a blog and commenting on blogs are only available to the paid version of The Blog App, which you users will have to purchase at the price of approximately USD 10.00.

You can also request from the Appcarvers team to customize the app to suits your site's themes and preferences. For instance, you can get the app to show logos, change colour schemes, and lots more. By customization, all features in the Pro versions will be automatically available. We highly suggest for you to customize your apps so that you'll get the best mobile blog apps specifically carved for you.

At first i was: WOW, an android app for EasySocial .. i must check it out :) .
Downloaded the app from Google Play on my Samsung Galaxy S4 (Android 5.0.1) and test it.
The app is sluggish, barely usable ... it's just not there yet unfortunately :(

I am not sure if it was developed using native code or any PhoneGap type platform, but for sure the performance is poor. Anyway, it's a step forward into the right direction bringing Joomla to mobile world, my best wishes to developers !

@Mist

Thanks for your feedback. The app is developed using Angular JS and HTML5 and compiled using PhoneGap. The performance is a function of the response time of the site. I assume the site might have been heavily loaded at the time you checked. You can check this demo video we made connecting the app to the StackIdeas demo where you can see its decently fast.

If you can get in touch with us, we'd love to help figure out why it was sluggish for you.

Thanks

"Hey Michael, do you know that mobile is the new trend for the Internet?"

my gosh, 10 Years ago you had been a trendsetter with the question. 10 years to late!
We are on the way to the next thing and this is voice interoperable apps and sites.

I've been playing with these apps from day one and unfortunately they just aren't there yet.

I have asked a number of questions on their blog comments and received no response. One major question I have is the modification of the source. What is required? Can anyone do it? Do they have documentation because I don't see any that is remotely helpful.

Another issue is the need to recompile the app for submission. I believe they charge a fee for this everytime. So if they have a release of the Apple Version every month and it cost $75 to recompile and submit the app to the apple store your price quickly goes beyond the advertised price.

If the team would develop a roadmap that the users can see and hold firm dates I would see possibly buying this app.

My advise... better integration (all features of current ES), faster, roadmap, user customizable, cheaper deployment and documentation.

James,
Apologies if the response has been slow. If you can point me to where the comment was made, we'll ensure you get a fast response. We were in a transition to move all apps related stuff to a dedicated site in which this might have been missed.

I will however answer your questions here right now.

A. Communication
We have now setup a dedicated forum as well as a support ticket system to ensure communication is better managed and streamlined. You should see that this has improved considerably now. We also plan to blog more regularly on whats happening now which will ensure no one's in the dark

B. Source Code
We give access to the complete appsource code in the period of your subscription. You are free to modify the code as needed. Documentation for this does not exist yet but the code itself is commented. This option is mainly for devs who don't want to start from scratch and can do their own builds. However we will provide docs on this shortly. I expect this will be done by first week of September.

C.App Compilation
Right now this is not automated which means that we need to manually do this for every customer which is why a token fee is charged. The efforts needed are much more and the fee is not remotely profitable to us. The plan is to automate the built process so that we dont need to get involved in this. Till that happens, the Documentation i talked about in B will let those who want to do it themselves, do it on their own.

D. The Roadmap
We have published roadmaps on our blogs but yes we have struggled with sticking to dates on them. We are working to improve this. However the platform we have built it (JUnite) is a a good base to build upon which means new features will come quicker.

E. As we get more things automated, the app will get cheaper and allow a good level of customization by the users themselves. Right now since a lot of that needs to be done by us manually as a service, its more expensive.

Thanks a lot James for your feedback. We are working to improve on all the areas as addressed above and hope we can have you on board as a customer.

When I first saw this on their site a few months back, I tried to reach out with some extending questions I had but never heard anything from them... So that kind of put me off to not look into them further. Now if their response/support time has changed since then, awesome. However just like most people here, I have the same concerns along with I'd need it to expand outside of StackIdeas platform to support the other services I have on my site.

The platform we are building this on - JUnite has been built in such a way that it can be scaled to include numerous extensions. The EasyBundle for instance packages ES and EB features. So we should be able to scale it to what you need. At the end of the Day, on one side is extending the data exposed via Webservices and on the other end, coding it into the app.

Hope we can help !

@Jan At present EasyDiscuss is not on the roadmap. Once we complete all features of EasySocial, we'll consider it. Right now EasyBlog is more or less complete. All important features are in. Overall Junite is built in a way that it can be scaled to include any extension.

  1.    Wayne Booth

@Wayne Did you try it with our demo site (inbuilt in the app) or with the StackIdeas demo ? We will be asking Mark to update some APIs on the StackIdeas demo that cause this. It should work fine with our demo though. As said above, till ES feature coverage is complete we wont be considering EasyDiscuss.. But its definitely in the long term plan. In case a lot of people ask for it on priority, we can increase its priority.

I suffered massively with a lack of communication and support around the Shika product from Techjoomla originally. I hope lessons have been learned on that product and things go better here as its great to see the promise here but my fear would be all the different products they have on their hands.

@James I apologize for any communication delays from the Techjoomla team around Shika. Its now being ensured that timely updates and communication around the product are being sent.

And yes lessons have been learnt both on that end as well as on the AC end and we have now made sure our Roadmaps reflect end user requirements and are prioritized based on the same. So we hope you will see the different on both fronts.

Hi @Witold,

1. For the website you need to make sure you are using the latest version of EasyBlog. Are you using version 3 by chance ?
2. Itunes has a older version of the App that has the wrong demo site details. We have submitted the latest version however its in the update queue. It should be updated soon including the EB Pro app Pro app for Itunes.

What you can do till it goes live is that you can use the Junite app to test .. It has the EasyBlog app bundled.

Hi @Buzzy,

If you are having issues with getting the app to work, can you please add a support ticket at appcarvers.com ? We can check why the app is facing connectivity issues with your site. The app gives you several native features like being able to quickly click and post photos from the camera. Eventually more native phone features like location etc will make their way into the application.
