This is great news with respect to the default image size for the cover.
I know this question is not really answerable.
It is like asking what is the best car on the planet.

a) But what image sizes would you guys recommend?
b) What image size presets are in there?
(I need to get some minor issues sorted before updating)
c) Do I have a way to edit the X (width) & Y (height) co-ordinates independently?
d) Are there custom widths/heights?

I currently have my blog images size set to 800 pixels times 450ish

I would like the image width to match up pretty much every where on the blog :-)
i.e. Images within posts and header/cover images

Why not have an option for custom image size? I personally would use the 1280px because it is the size of my template, but some other folks use other sizes like 960px and so on. Just mentioning this for the future.

Yup, it's compatible with Joomla 2.5; though we highly recommend you to upgrade your site to Joomla 3 as soon as you can.
