Development updates for EasyBlog 3.5

Development updates for EasyBlog 3.5

Some of you might be wondering why we've actually used the version of EasyBlog 3.5 instead of EasyBlog 4.0 since the previous releases are all incremented by one. When we started off with EasyBlog 3.0 a couple of months back, we have identified quite a number of difficulties that most users are facing. But that wasn't perfected enough as there were still some underlying usability issues which required our immediate attention.

Hence, instead of introducing EasyBlog 4.0, this time it would be EasyBlog 3.5.

Speed, speed and more SPEED!

We have noticed that most of these social buttons are hogging up the speed to load up the pages from your site. In 3.5, we will be introducing bookmarklet to solve this! It does not bring any differences to the appearance of the social buttons but the speed to render these social buttons have been optimized by almost 200%! A big YAY to that :)

Micro Postings

Often, your user only want to post a very short story or updates of their status and instead of using the full version of the blog submission form, we have introduced micro postings. Micro Postings allows your user to quickly share a quick story or photo without the hassle of going through the bells and whistle's of a full fledged blogging environment. In short, blogging is now EVEN easier :)

Multi Language support (Joomla 1.6, 1.7 and 2.5 only)

We had Joomfish support for Joomla 1.5, but it is almost impossible for users to have multi language support on Joomla 1.6, 1.7 and Joomla 2.5. We have now added a new language selector when you publish a new blog post. Users can choose from the list of the supported languages and the post will only appear when they are on specific languages. In other words, your blog is automatically translated to the chosen language that you desire.

Revised Toolbar

Remember the old toolbar? We grew tired of it and decided to adopt the same toolbar that is available on EasyDiscuss 2.0 into EasyBlog 3.5. So far, feedback from users have been encouraging! We have taken a similar approach here for EasyBlog where the toolbar has been reworked to mimic it's little sister.

Intuitive Layouts

We believe that aesthetics also contribute largely in the overall experience of the Joomla tools that we build. EasyBlog will have minor facelifts on most of the design elements in 3.5 and hopefully, blogging will be much sweeter to your eyes.

Crowd Reporting

In the earlier versions of EasyBlog, there's no way for the user to report a blog post if it is offensive. The only way for that is to contact the admin manually. In EasyBlog 3.5, we will be introducing a new feature where members of the site can report against a blog post to the site admin instantly.

Email Templates

Remember the days where you had to customize the template file to alter your language files? Those days are over. The translations are now done in the language file and on top of that, we will also be introducing an attractive new email template layout.

Smart Search Integrations (Joomla 2.5)

I am sure that most of you are already aware of this cool extension that comes with Joomla 2.5. We love it to bits! We've also created a plugin that would work seamlessly with Smart Search a.k.a "The Finder".

There are just too many features to have them listed here but stick around our blogs as we will be posting more updates on EasyBlog 3.5.
Stay tuned! ;)

Thanks for the continued development of Easyblog! Our clients love it!!! As for changing of the backend menu, PLEASE test it with Rocket Theme's Mission Control admin template. We use it for over 200 websites because it's consistent from 1.5 to 2.5 and VERY easy to train clients on. The 2.x series was a train-wreck on alternate admin templates and we had to do quite a bit of CSS hacking to get it to work properly.

Again, thanks for the best blogging addon for Joomla!

Thank you Eric! Yes, EasyBlog 3.0 actually starts supporting Mission Control themes already. We'll try this internally.

Wow - Can't wait - Way more exciting than the iPad3 launch and deserving of more media attention. EasyBlog is a major miracle! When can we get going helping with beta testing?! Also in the first screen-shot above, I'm really hoping admin can set the dimensions of what is 'Large' and 'Small' for the picture sizes.... that way things can be perfectly tailored to individual sites...

Thanks Andy! The "dimensions" can actually be created by the user. It's per image actually

This is fantastic. What about the commenting system. It would be nice if it was the same one from EasyDiscuss and also that a new discussion would be created in EasyDiscuss (if you own it) for each blog, in a category of your choice when you set up the blog.

EasyDiscuss comments will be integrated with EasyBlog 3.5 and you have the option to enable multiple comments too!

Great news
Are you planning to 'upgrade' the remote e-mail blogging feature for version 3.5?
I'm specially thinking of the possibility to assign users to different and specific categories.

  1.    Mads Andersen

Mads, the remote mail blogging will include the ability to map to the user account based on the email address that they used to send. There will also be some layout changes on the way email blogs appear on the blog listings

I am currently using MyBlog, do you have a migrator to import it? Do you provide comment or must I purchase separately?

  1.    John Riz

John, we actually have a built in migrator to migrate from MyBlog over to EasyBlog as stated in http://bit.ly/GICX4S Yes, EasyBlog comes with a built in commenting system and you do not need to purchase this separately

This looks like a very good update. I had noticed page loading time to be fairly slow compared to a normal joomla site so well done. One thing I would suggest to limit the number of http requests would be to group javascript includes into one or few large js files, same for CSS too. You could also use the CSS sprites technique to increase speed and limit page load on the server.

Are there any plans for a migrator for blogger blogs? This is the only thing missing as far as I'm concerned - a...

Thanks Patrick! In EasyBlog 3.5, all of our scripts are loaded asynchronously. This also means that we'll see lesser conflicts with components and it is not as obstructive as loading javascripts on the page itself. This would also fix speed issues as well

Just an observation based on my experience with this page now comments have gone to two pages.... In case like this one (a long article) that's a fair bit of scrolling to do!

The StackIdeas Team is bleeding edge when it comes to making version improvements to your products. The new additions to 3.5 are awesome.

I'm particularly interested in what improvements have or will be made to image insertion? If text wrapping around images is added, then huge kudos. If not, it would be on the top of my wish list to see some improvement on text wrapping around images, similar to the way Apple Pages makes it so simple to wrap text around images.

Hello Randall,

Thank you Randall! Not too sure your definition of wrapping text around images but this is what will happen in EasyBlog 3.5:

1. Align them using your WYSIWYG editor (This is the whole idea behind using a WYSIWYG editor) . In EasyBlog 3.0, we tried to be smart by wrapping them around based on the given parameters but things has gotten out of hand as users don't get full control of the layout.

2. Using the blog image, you can now place blog images in locations that you want by editing the theme. For instance, if you want all blog images to be aligned on the left, your user would only need to upload their "blog image" and using the template, you can position these images to wherever you want. In other words, everything would be standardized making your blog layouts cleaner.

Hey Andy,

It's pretty hectic actually Tons of new stuff's being added and we're actually closing in for a beta soon. I can't really provide an exact date but I guess it could be due in a week or two? Just a very rough estimation

I have found out an error in the current version.
Media Manager. I create a folder, the name not in English, for example in Russian (Новая Папка). Creation occurs successfully, but loading of pictures and their insert does not work.

The new version of Joomla (Joomla 1.7) meets the growing security concerns besides offering a range of new features like multi language support, search and favorable SEO settings. Now migration to latest version of Joomla becomes easier and is one click away.
