4th of July updates on EasySocial 1.4 and demo site

Hey guys, it has been a while since we blogged about the progress of EasySocial 1.4 and I have to admit that it's our misjudgement over the progress of EasyBlog 5. Nonetheless, we are almost done with EasyBlog 5 now and the entire team will now be focusing on EasySocial 1.4 and EasySocial 2.0.

Initially, we were thinking of revamping the entire layout in EasySocial 1.4 but later decided that we should move these layout changes within EasySocial 2.0 instead. It is a separate milestone and it is being worked on by a separate team. It contains plenty of UX / UI / resource changes including the way our javascript libraries are being rendered. We will not be including these changes on EasySocial 1.4 because these changes are too major and we do not want to affect users who have already been working on the existing layout.

Videos

Videos is one of the key features in EasySocial 1.4 as it allows site members to be able to upload videos as well as link external videos within EasySocial. With the new EasySocial 1.4, you will be able to upload videos, share some info about the video (description, location etc) and categorize them accordingly. There's also an option to 'feature' a video; making it easy for you to show off any cool videos that you have created.

Get more grasp of the video page by checking out the screenshots below.

Comments

In EasySocial 1.4, we have also enhanced the functionality of the comments throughout EasySocial by allowing users to upload pictures and also able to select smileys when commenting on the site. Currently the smileys are already pre-defined with the installation of EasySocial 1.4. However, we do have plans on allowing admins to have their own smileys by uploading their own emoticon files. This will be available in the future, after we've released EasySocial 1.4. :)

Pictorial comments can be enabled or disabled by the site's administrators from the backend. Check out the screenshots :

Polls

Another new feature that we've added in the up-coming EasySocial 1.4, polls will allow users to create their own polls in EasySocial without having to have a third-party apps and/or component. Polls' are done straight from the story box itself and will have the option to have as many options as they want. Users will also have the option to set the privacy of their polls.

You can view the screenshot of this new feature by clicking on the image gallery below :

Administration

We have also improvised and standardized the back end layout to be in synchronize with EasyBlog 5 and Komento 2.0 as well. One of our main goal is to ensure that all of our products are integrated both in terms of usability and feel. The backend design of Komento 2.0 and EasyBlog 5 provides users with a fresh feeling and ensure that everything looks beautiful without sacrificing the user-experience. We're implementing the same concept, the same design, and the same idea, to EasySocial 1.4's backend. Managing EasySocial's site will become easier with the up-coming EasySocial 1.4.

You can have a peek at the design by clicking on the image below :

Custom Fields

Custom fields are the cool feature that makes EasySocial so unique. As time progresses, we've added more  custom field to ensure that our users are able to customize their site's details according to their own unique needs and preferences. With the up-coming EasySocial 1.4, we've refactored the custom field's code to ensure that anything and everything related to it runs smoother; from applying custom fields up to searching for the values.

The enhancement is actually under-the-hood hence I don't have any screenshot to share with you guys (sorry!) but you will feel the difference once you've upgraded to the new EasySocial 1.4.

Conversations

Conversation also faces some updates; you can now message anyone in the site, even those who are not in your friend's list. This is reflected when you create a new message and type in the name of another user in the recipient field. Apart from that, the Conversation page were also given a minor update on styling in order to give you a more elegant feel whenever you strike a conversation with users in your site.

Photo Albums

A cool new feature has been added to the photo albums in the up-coming EasySocial 1.4; we've added the option to set albums as "favorite". With this, the photo album will be shown in the photo album's widget instead of new photo albums. You can set multiple favourites so that these photo albums are shown in your Photo Album apps.

There are more updates on 1.4 but I shall probably stop here and will post more updates on EasySocial 1.4 in the coming days :)

Demo Site Update

Apart from the EasySocial 1.4 development update, we've also updated our demo site with all the latest version of our component. Not only that, we've set it up so that each component is well-integrated with the other. Visitors can now view the updated versions of our components and check on how the integration between each of them works. Do drop by and check it out!

Thanks Mark. However, this version of ES looks quite different (even better) than what the stock version looks like. Is this a custom template?

Ah...This is not ES. It's EasyBlog fontpage?

Yep, the front page of the demo is EasyBlog. We have merged all our demo's into 1 single site to showcase how all our extensions could work together hand in hand

Looking really awesome and loving what I see! I really appreciate the insight of ES and the sneak preview. I only have one complaint, the emoticons for ES 1.4 are not as good. The current ones are a lot more professional and do not try to be overly shiny. Plus the current ones are pretty fun to use.

I am however grateful that there is a emoticon button.

Jan, performance optimization and tweaks on the js and css will only be made available on 2.0 as we do not want to slow down the progress of 1.4

Be sure to place them all in the media folder. This is for SEO purposes so that we don't lose rank based on needing the responsive files visible. Otherwise people have to manually update their robots.txt to allow the files in the /components directory.

Thanks Mark, for clients who are using your 4 products their website can be very heavy to load under 2 or 3s, i think there is some commun scripts which can be shared or optimized.

great work, go ahead !

@jan! I definitely agree with your comment. We are also using multiple components from SI and I'm sure there are some common scripts, code, etc... which could be more efficiently utilized... I'm sure Mark and the guys will take care of that in 2.0 etc...

Good to know that planning & road map is in place for optimizations, i'm a non technical person but purely from a logic perspective common library does make sense. One more request @mentions, #hastags should be made available throughout the components of ES/ED/EB commenting features, this way there would be tighter integrations among all your comps.

I know its premature to ask, but do you also have an estimated/probable/wildguess timeline for ES2.0, as currently my thoughts are to skip 1.4 and move from 1.3 to 2.0 directly.

LOOOKING GREAT!!!! Thanks so much for EB5 and ES1.4. I have been waiting for both to release my website concept.

Quick question, have you consider adding TAGs to videos? I like the feature of tagging people to videos, but been able to create tags for videos in addition to categories would help to use ES as a social video directory.

Also, my suggestions would be to allow users to tag other users like right now, but instead of having that user's name link to it's profile, why not...

Let me know and again, GREAT work!

I really hope that the following gets implemented in the upcoming ES:

1) Stream Notification titles (http://stackideas.com/forums/notification-fixes-required-in-es-1-4)
2) Major JS optimisations, i gather have been pushed to ES 2.0
3) Fonts and CSS optimisations, i gather have been pushed to ES 2.0
4) Common JS framework for all your awesome components. (ES, EB, ED can surely have a common underlying js framework instead of loading their own)
5) Custom ES comments posting into streams...

just my wishlist

Looks very nice. Its a great shame that you have decided not to introduce Extended Photo details and dropped it from the roadmap altogether. Further to this I am still confused as to why every element Events, Videos, Groups and Blogs have categories and Photos do not? I just don't get the logic (excuse the pun).

Dave, once ES 1.4 is finished I have a lot of great ideas for photos that are not hard to implement and would benefit pretty much everyone. From my perspective the roadmap is incomplete which is why I'm not worried about it. Take for example on the voices section there are ideas that are accepted/planned but are not put on the roadmap. Yes it may take longer than we hope for photo additions, however I have confidence that the photo gallery someday will be flexible to meet the needs of most....

When I learn more scripting stuff, I plan on helping. Unfortunately my head injury from over 10 months ago is really putting me back with this (still getting bad head aches and such). Learning is one of the hardest on me right now.

I believe that the success of Social Community component is the ability to be able to be able to shape it to your needs.

Dave, that's a very good pun.

I believe for Photos, we have the 'albums' to sort out the images; having "albums" and "categories" might complicate matters further. From my observation, most of the major social networking doesn't have "categories" for their images; but hey I might be wrong.

I certainly believe there is a place for this. But it must be carefully thought out. Also it should not be forced upon the user for the sake of simplistic uploading.

I understand demo template can't be shared...

However it would be nice to be able to download quickstart package with all the components and modules with their integrations already in place - it would be a huge time saver for those who buy all stackideas components.

When will it be possible to create business pages/fan pages in Easysocial? This is something a lot of people have asked for. Cant find the request in "Voices" anymore, but when i google it, i can see that the request have been there.

Several of the Voices (many accepted) were removed when the RoadMap for 1.4 was streamlined. If you look at Photos for example (the area I care about the most and the subject I voted on a lot) there are only now 5 remaining - http://stackideas.com/voices/easysocial/category/photos all of which are not accepted and have few votes..

Hey James,

We're actually still working on 1.4 right now and yes, as you have mentioned, most of the tasks are being tested internally right now and we're only left with a couple of main tasks

Once those testings / features are done, you may expect a beta release of 1.4
