Hello:

We are finalizing the organization of a forum. Our client is hoping to set up main categories as containers with subcategories. Each subcategory requires different access for its User Groups.
For instance:
Main category
Sub - Category 1 - User Group A
Sub - Category 2 - User Group B
Sub - Category 3 - User Group C

However, when I set up permissions, using User A as an example, they login and only see their category as Sub - Category 1. Once they have selected the category at the top of the page , a breadcrumb menu appears showing Main category > Sub - Category 1.

But, if they select the Main category link, the other sub-categories appear. They cannot edit in them, but the client wishes that User A only sees. Sub - Category 1.

In order for the user to see the subcategory, they must be able to see the main category therefore they have to be granted permissions along with the other user groups. By doing this, they can now see the other categories. Obviously, if I do not let them see the main category, then they cannot see the sub-categories.

The next thing I noticed that although they cannot post to the other sub categories, they can subscribe to it. WE like the subscription option, but only where permitted. They should not be able to subscribe to a subcategory they should not have permissions to.

I may not be setting this up correctly, reviewed documentation, tried different options. I would appreciate your assistance.

Also, I have reset all the subcategories to main for now until I hear back from you.

Channing
Hi Channing,

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

You have configure setting as below:
Main category(container)
-Sub1 (Only user group A can see and post)
-Sub2 (Only user group B can see and post)
-Sub3 (Only user group C can see and post)

1st problem:
[example I login as user A]As I go to the Main category it will shows the other subcategory (Sub2 and Sub3)? https://www.screencast.com/t/o1kOd1lEIOE

2nd problem:
The next thing I noticed that although they cannot post to the other sub categories, they can subscribe to it. WE like the subscription option, but only where permitted. They should not be able to subscribe to a subcategory they should not have permissions to.

-> I'm not quite get you here, perhaps can you give some screenshot on how you subscribe on other subcategory (eg: sub2 using userA)?

Hello:

Initially, I set up the subcategories, Committee as a container, then the subcategories. I have since moved them back to all the sub categories being parents until we see if we can do this.

Thank you.

Hi Channing,

Thanks for the screenshot
I've try to replicate as per screenshot given (using current version of EasyDiscuss 4.0.12) seems like as I click the subcategory that I'm don't the permission (Sub2) as I'm login as user A. it will redirected to recent page instead of the Sub2 page. And if you make the parent category (Committees) as container the 'subscribe by email' will not appear.
Perhaps, can you provide us with your back end and FTP access to your site to check on this issue?

You can add the information needed by edit your first post in the Details section or you can just include your site's access once at http://stackideas.com/dashboard/site rather than needing to keep adding them in your replies

Hello Fadhli:

In a previous post I added the login information you requested.
1. Would you prefer I update that dashboard or can you access site?
2. A most important problem has just occurred and we are not sure how to address as it is somewhat connected to the permissions problems we are having. I could create a new ticket if you like, but here is our issue. Some of the categories we created were only to be seen and have notifications to certain user groups. For instance, the board members user group could post in a categoriy only for board members to review. However, when a board member posted in the board member category, an email was sent out to everyone in all user groups taht have access tot he forum. Not only that, there were attachments that a lower level user could open even though they did not have access to the board member area of the forum

In the Notifications area, we have set it such that whenever a person posts, the whole membership will be able to get a notification. However, we do not want posts in certain categories to go to everyone.

I am sorry if I have not set up permissions correctly.

I appreciate you assistance on both these issues please.

Regards,
Channing

Hi Channing Meyer,

Kindly find my response below:
In a previous post I added the login information you requested.

-> Thanks for that, but with the login credential given, I'm still cannot access your backend as well frontend https://www.screencast.com/t/pEvbMNnd

-> Correct me if I'm wrong, do you mean as you enable the setting 'Notify all users on new post' https://www.screencast.com/t/TbuGZRgd7bJ
the user on other group as well get the email notification? This is default behavior where by enabling this, all users would be notified when a new discussion is created on the site even-though you've restrict the view permission in each categories. The only way to get each member get the specific email notification on their category is by subscribe by category https://www.screencast.com/t/xdlZDP7M

Hello Fadhli:

I have changed the password and you should now be able to get in (I tested it).

Regarding the email notifications, is there a way to only have certain user groups, e.g. those that are on committees, only receive notifications in those specific categories e.g. Financial Committee (only financial committee and board members get notifications when there is a post in that category), Legal committee, (only legal committee and board members get notifications when there is a post in that category), etc.? We want to keep some categories private.

Please note, the organization wants everyone to receive notifications on new posts but only in certain categories.

If not this could put me a bind with the organization. I figured that since we had full control of access on the frontend and that would also relate to the notifications only going those.

Hello:

Thank you for you help. One other thing, can we prevent attachments from being emailed on upload? I did not see that setting.

Hi Channing,

Regarding you first inquiry,Unfortunately, currently we do not have the feature to send out email to the user according to the category permission currently as you enable the 'Notify all users on new post'. . But it would be best if you can submit a feature request regarding this issues in our voice page -> http://stackideas.com/voices, so everyone else could vote for it, the more people request on this, and we will priority consider it

Thank you for you help. One other thing, can we prevent attachments from being emailed on upload? I did not see that setting.

-> Unfortunately, there is no setting to prevent attachments from emailed on upload currently.
