It's currently 6:19 a.m. where I'm at, if I create an event right now the default is to assign the start time to 6 a.m. When I submitted the event using the default it immediately became a past event. If I recall right the old default was 12:00 p.m. (mid day). It was perfect in my opinion, why was it changed? Event submission time has pretty much nothing to do with the time you would assign to it (except perhaps the date).

So we need one of two things done:

1. Set the default time to 12 p.m. (it is a common event hour). My site would use morning hours, but I'm looking out for most ES users here.

2. Have no default time and have the user select it somehow.

As noted in another thread setting the default date is a little problematic. The current method used for the end date in my opinion is perfect.

I think the default time is really very subjective. What if you have a site that is dealing with "night markets" and your events run mostly at night

With a start time currently being mandatory, I think the best 'default' time to populate is 00:00.

Some of my events are full day things (for example today is 'StackIdeas Appreication Day') and others are 'Save the Date' type events... where the date is known well in advance, but not necessarily the time.

In these instances and more (including for example events where there are staggered start times), I find myself having to put the time back to 00:00 as the best option (or 12:00am as I'm using 12 hr clock)....

So just adding my view for a 00:00 default start time

Perhaps the start date should be from the current datetime, rounded to the next hour.

That would certainly be better than the current method. A few more ideas are allowing the admin to choose the default time or have the date by default one day ahead. After all it would be silly to post a event page on the day of the event (lack of time for members to respond). The last second folks could always change the date. I should also note that events on the current date should not display in past events when no end time is assigned. If your throwing a party at 7 pm and people look at 7:05 pm it will be listed as a past event even though its still taking place!

Speaking of event time, if I recall right ES 1.3.6 was supposed to remove the admin option for disabling time? It's still there (tested this on a fresh es install to confirm this). When hiding the time currently it defaults to 12 am. Not docking on the option, just trying to confirming what the intentions are.

Under that case, if an event doesn't have a "end date" and it shouldn't be past event, then the event will end up always being an upcoming event.

Because end date is now optional, the only data that we can check against is start date currently.

Regarding this "end date" debacle, I actually think that, even if you do not know what time does the event end, an event creator should still set an event end to inform users on the estimated time of end. For instance, a birthday party, it is true that you might not know when will it really end but an invitation will most likely state that it will end at an estimated datetime. (This is just my point of view)

I was supposed to remove the Allow Time settings but was too rushed in the previous release. Will remove it accordingly in the upcoming release.

One major concern I have is users forgetting to change the time that is assigned by default. So one solution is to have no default time (but have a pre-selected one). Here's a screen shot I made of how time could be assigned (this makes it more obvious too):



For the most part removing the optional time feature is understandable, however there is the possibility that a user may want to plan a event months in advance but not know the time. So if the above screen shot is considered, a very healthy compromise would be to add a admin option that allows the time to be optional to the user but always display on edit mode. Events is more than just getting quick get togethers, it can be a planning tool! Having the clock icon is pretty much the same number of clicks considering the current method requires a click to access the clock.

The methods I advised dodges a lot of issues. There is a reason facebook does not force the time upon you.

@Josh, Regarding the time being optional, there are some internal concerns (be it database and coding structure), hence for now we'll focus on completing the remaining 1.3.x features first (there are actually a few more new features for 1.3.x planned).

I'll add in an option to not auto set a default time for the start date time, that case the form will then show an error. (I am not sure if I can rush this in time for the direct upcoming release, but it will definitely be in the short term upcoming releases)

Awesome! I'm very pleased to see that configurable. The middle option looks rather lengthy. However I'll see how it works before getting picky about the length of the name. Once again we are very excited about the work you do for the community.
