I agree with you that Search should be universal but what are you gonna do with a website that has a lot of content types? People nowadays doesn't have patience to go through each result and read then select. I'm speaking in my own experience with our demography, people expect that when they search for a keyword, they will be taken exactly to what they are looking for else they would simply go away and say I cannot find it. I guess, the same reason for other people who uses Google, and that is why few people are very good with finding things in Google. Bottom line is people just don't have the time to read (or too lazy to read - I tend to like the idea that they are

As to the dilemma of site owners
, what are we gonna do as developers? Well, perhaps, settings is great!
it empowers site owners the choice of having the option so they could pick what works for them. I understand the complexity it creates for you as component developer, but it is what makes your product stand out from others.
If I may suggest, an option to hide Advanced Search for selected Profile. ES Advanced Search is just too open for everyone.
