Hi Gentleman,

Today I have a question about data storage. I run a Linux CentOS root server currently limited to 80 GB Data storage. The max. Data storage space on my machine is limited to 500 GB. That is not very much I believe.

Now on my site user uploading videos and pictures continues and will be increasing sooner or later. In equestrian sports users probably upload lots of videos and photos to my side. For e.g. if 200,000 users need more than 1 GB data storage for each user, what server housing would be best for me?
Don“t get me wrong -not yet of course, but it could be the case one day. Would you suggest to handle this amount of data with Amazon S3 Services.?

And what I am going to do with the pictures and videos I have already stored on my hosted account now. Consider the fact that local affordable PC hard drives already have storage space 5 TB and more. This seems to me a very impartant issue and should be somehow discussed.

How are you handle this? I guess you have your own data center or server housing?

Thank you:D
Yes, I will suggest you to use Amazon S3 to store all those media files especially image and videos those required more spaces to store it, and another good thing is it helps you backup on your cloud server.

Thank you Arlex

Does this mean - Videos and Photos are stored external on Amazon S3. Database instead will be stored on regular home web space or root server?

In case of software failure or other problems, making backup of root server data is easier because of the smaller size of data?

I suggest 80 GB Root Server space is enough for only database tables and Joomla core files including all extensions.?

Offline Backup would be than only Joomla core files, while Images and Videos are backed up on Amazon S3 Cloud. If I am ride I believe Amazon S3 is only a cloud storage, not appropriate to run Joomla core files in Server modus?.

You're welcome Peter

Yes, if you talking about Easysocial regarding this, and that is not only push the video and photo file to Amazon S3, you can check my screenshot here : http://take.ms/aFVwE , you can decide which media files you would like to push to Amazon S3, but as long as that is media files, most of the user will set all push to Amazon S3.

And it actually depend on you whether you would like to automatically delete the files when it pushed to Amazon S3, there got an option "Delete Files After Upload", if you enabled this option mean it will no longer store any media files into your local server.

In case of software failure or other problems, making backup of root server data is easier because of the smaller size of data?

I believe nowadays backup the root server data is quite easier and faster compare last time.
The reason why most of the user site would like to store those media files in cloud storage is because it actually helps the site load the media files on the page faster than when it load from your local server, it will help the site performance issue.

I suggest 80 GB Root Server space is enough for only database tables and Joomla core files including all extensions.?

I am not sure what extension you installed, as long as other extension not like Easysocial this big extension, it should be enough.

Offline Backup would be than only Joomla core files, while Images and Videos are backed up on Amazon S3 Cloud. If I am ride I believe Amazon S3 is only a cloud storage, not appropriate to run Joomla core files in Server modus?

Yes, that is correct.
