We would like to be able to show our Blog in both a Public and a Registered menu area (Joomla ACLs referenced) and wondered if this is possible?

Previously the Blog was just visible to Registered users i.e. once they logged into our site, but we now want to open up the content so it's visible to Public users who don't have an account too.

As the site is subscription-based the menus for Public and Registered area are separate. The problem we're having when we have created the new Public menu item for our Blog is that as soon as you click to view a category or individual blog it reverts you to the version under the Registered menu item alias. The problem with this is that the menu therefore changes from Public to Registered i.e. it physically takes you to the Registered area of the website.

Is there any work around to this so that users stay and view the blog within the area they are actually in whether that be the Public area or the Registered area?

Thanks
Katrina
Hello Katrina,

By doing this you might end up with duplicate urls on Google but what you could do instead is to lock the permissions based on the category. In each category, you can define if the viewing permissions of the category and this way, EasyBlog would then hide items based on the user's login state

Hi there

OK so I've opened everything up to public i.e. viewable by all users etc and that seems to have worked in some instances, but not all. And what I mean by worked is that when you click on a blog to see it in the Public area, you remain in the Public area to read it.

However there are still some instances where it takes you to the Members area instead. I've rechecked the Category permissions of the ones that take you off to the logged in area and these are set correctly to 'Viewable to all users' and the blog posts themselves are also set to Viewable to everyone so am at a loss as to why it still won't keep you within the area you are located to view these blogs.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Katrina

Hi Katrina,

However there are still some instances where it takes you to the Members area instead.

Do you mean the public user still can view the blog post from a category where is only view-able by members of the site?
May I know which category that is only members can view? So we can look after its configuration

Is it possible for you to provide us with the back end and FTP access to your site to check on this issue?

You can add the information needed by edit your first post in the Details section or you can just include your site's access once at http://stackideas.com/dashboard/site rather than needing to keep adding them in your replies

Hi

Yes the user can view the blogs of the affected categories but the menu items all drop out and the alias changes so you can tell it is redirecting the user to the Members area.

The alias of the Public blog is https://www.edcentral.uk/edblog/XXXXXX but the Members area is https://www.edcentral.uk/edblogs/XXXXXX

I hope that makes sense.

An example of a post that behaves correct when you are viewing simply at a Public level is: https://www.edcentral.uk/edblog/beginner-guides/a-beginners-guide-to-doctor-michael-fullan-1 - all of the posts falling within the Beginners' Guides category retain the /edblog/alias once you navigate down through the category.

An example of a post within the This Week in EdResearch category that redirects you to the Members area once you try to view a blog within it is: https://www.edcentral.uk/edblogs/this-week/benchmarking-against-the-best-in-the-world - all posts within this category change to the /edblogs/ alias.

I think the issue however is at Post level. When you simply click to view the posts within specific categories, the aliases appear to be correct, it is only when you drill down to Post level that the alias changes in some instances and redirects you.

I will add credentials now for you.

Thanks
Katrina

PS. today is my last day working before Christmas.

Hello Katrina,

Sorry but I am actually a little lost here. Would you mind providing me the steps that you took to get to the login / members page?

If you go to our main website http://www.edcentral.uk/edblog you'll see our full list of blogs available to view as a Public visitor i.e. not a logged in member.

If you go to this blog: https://www.edcentral.uk/edblog/beginner-guides/a-beginners-guide-to-doctor-michael-fullan-1 then the menu items shown are correct as these are the menu items that people who are not registered to our website will see i.e. Home, About, Packages etc.

If you go to this blog however: https://www.edcentral.uk/edblogs/this-week/benchmarking-against-the-best-in-the-world then all of the menu items except for EdBlogs disappear. This is because I have made EdBlogs within the Members area a Public ACL. It was the only way to allow the blogs in this category to be visible.

If you look at the two aliases they are different - the one that works correctly for the Public ACL is /edblog/ but the one that takes users to the Members area becomes /edblogs/.

However, in addition to this issue I've now noticed it also causes the same issue but the other way around. So if you login as a member and try to view the post 'A beginners guide to Doctor Michael Fullan', rather than allowing you to read it as a logged in member (i.e. with menu items visible being Dashboard, EdNews, EdTalk etc) it's reverting you back to the Public area and the menu shown become the Home, About, Packages etc.

Basically we want the blogs to be visible and accessible to Public visitors but we also want them to be visible to Members. The issue is that it doesn't seem to allow users to view the posts within the area that they navigating around. It's just all over the place. Some posts can only be seen in the Members area and some are only visible in the Public area.

Would the resolution to do a secondary installation somehow?

Hi Katrina,
Upon examining your menu item structure. It seems you have 2 EasyBlog (Posts) Frontpage menu items(alias edblog and edblogs). This actually causes confusion to the system as both are EasyBlog frontpages, which is why you can see certain posts under edblog and certain posts under edblogs.
If you look at the post's url, it falls un edblog, and edblog falls under the guest menu(http://take.ms/Y3Cke), which is why you are seeing menu items from the guest menu.

I would suggest you to only use 1 EasyBlog (Posts) Frontpage menu item and put one of each category menu item under it. In other words, eliminate duplicate frontpage and category menu items.
For the menu items, you don't need to have a 'guest menu' and 'main menu'. You can actually put all the menu items under one main menu and set the permission accordingly. For example, you can set the Home, About, Packages... permission level to 'Guest'. That way only guest users can see this menu item. For Dashboard, EDTalk and so on, you can set the permission level to 'Registered'. This will show the menu items to users under 'Registered'. You should give this menu configuration a try and see if it suit your needs.
