According to this article https://stackideas.com/docs/easysocial/administrators/templating/overriding-app-icons I can install custom icons. I looked in the directory that the article says where they should be and the stock icons are in the correct location. Yet only a generic CSS background color shows on the app directory. Most of the stock icons would be fine if they would show up, a few I would like to customize. I have not made the override directory yet as even the stock installed icons do not display. I could not find anywhere in the admin settings to change from CSS color blocks to png icons either.

Need help in turning on the png icons.

This is a staging site for upgrading the main live site from 1.4 ES to 2.0 ES
Hello Bruce,

Since EasySocial 2.x, we have removed the icons altogether and used the letter based avatars for apps. The reason for doing that is because it solves 2 issues:

1. Performance issues because when there are more images to load on a page, it slows down the loading time. For something that is not quite informative, it would be pointless to render the logo. (See my second comment below)

2. End user's really doesn't need to know about the logo because most of the time these apps are developed by Joomla extensions and their logo doesn't give the user much insights.

3. Retina screen issues. Having an image as a logo looks good on a normal screen but when it comes to retina screens or larger screen resolutions (4k display), your image will be distorted. The only way to solve this is to provide 2 image types and this again is redundant because a larger resolution of the image equates into a larger file size. If you have 10 apps on the page and each app image is about 100kb, then you have an additional 1MB wastage.

Thanks for the reply Mark. When I saw the icons still in the directories of ES I thought I might have missed something far as being able to turn them on. I'm assuming the icons are still there because I upgraded from 1.4 to 2.0?

Yep, that's correct Bruce. Joomla's installer doesn't "remove" files / folders that are already on the site . It only overwrites them

Thanks again Mark. Yeah I'm always cleaning folders out on really old sites. I don't bother with something that is only a couple years old. I would never get anything done.

No problem Bruce. Yep, I wish future versions of Joomla would support removal of unused files / folders but I guess they are probably not doing that to prevent unwanted folders / files getting removed.
