Two more good articles for online community builders and managers.

1. Page Load Speeds and Your Online Community
Business 2 Community-Jul 15, 2014

A user may initiate a visit to your online community and because the page ... Within an online community, a conversion could be a membership ...

There is no denying – the way the Internet is presented is constantly changing. In today’s hyper-connected world, web pages are much richer and contain more functionality, which results in increased amounts of page data and external resources to power them.

As technology advances, web users have become to expect a visually appealing community sites, and fast page loading times. The speed at which a browser loads your community content, means the difference between engagement or abandonment – a problem which could be detrimental to your online community.
Often, efforts to optimise web code, including the reduction of overall site density to improve download performance, are not enough to ensure a healthy and successful online community.

Page load speeds have to be considered. This post shows how a decrease in page load and rendering times benefit an online community.

2. Why People Contribute in Private Online Communities Engagement Tips ...
Business 2 Community-Jul 16, 2014

People have lots of outlets and opportunities to “talk” online. There’s no shortage of large social networks out there to soak up their attention. Yet, despite having so many options, people still participate heavily in private online customer or member communities.

Often, they simply need a secure space to discuss topics that might be of a more personal or professional nature than their public Facebook page can handle.

By participating in private online communities, your customers or members are building a network of people who have similar needs and interests. Starting discussions, responding to questions, building out their profile, or adding content to your private community (such as videos or file resources) are all ways in which they’re building that network.

Still, many organizations are challenged with getting their customers or members to begin contributing in their private online communities.

Your organization has a unique value proposition that brings your customer base or membership to your private online customer community on a regular basis. Yet, regardless of what the specific and individual “reasons why” someone would take time out of their day to visit your community are, there are still proven themes that drive private online community contributions.

3. Five Reasons to Start an Online Community

Creating an online community can be so rewarding. One of the first steps is to get in the mindset of your target audience and define what it is you want he or she to gain from your community.

Do you have special or unique knowledge a member could benefit from? Could you provide a new connection or idea for their business? In order to have an active and thriving group of members – or customers! – on your site, stay true to one of the reasons below.

4. Orkut is Out and These Three Online Community Platforms are In

Incase you haven’t heard by now, the almighty Google is giving it’s first ever social network, Orkut, the boot. Google acquired Orkut more than a decade ago from a former employee who used his “20% time” (Google employees are encouraged to work on personal projects for a brief portion of their workday) to build the site. Rumor has it Marissa Mayer had to convince the former product manager, Orkut Büyükkökten, to let Google name the network after him.

Orkut achieved relative international popularity, and at one point in time was one of the top ten social networking sites in India and Brazil. Unfortunately Orkut never gained the kind of traction stateside that Google hoped it would and it was announced June 30th, 2014 that Google would be shutting Orkut down.
Those who have personal profiles and content on Orkut currently need not to worry. Google promises to allow users to archive their profiles, photos and content via Google Takedown until September 30th, 2014. After you manage to get your Orkut profile squared away, try one of these three online community alternatives!

Jackson,

You are welcome. I will add more articles as they become available.

As per your question on a boiler plate, I would modify a Terms and Conditions that you like from another site to fit your site focus. Why reinvent the wheel or go to the expense of playing a lawyer to grab one from the web and have them modify it. I modified and existing Terms and Condition or Acceptable Use Policy to fit my site's focus.

As an example, this is the Acceptable Use Policy (Terms and Conditions) from a new site that I found. It was obviously written by a lawyer, and I have modified it to be generic so anyone here can modify it and add it to their site. Most terms and conditions are similar. The best ones are simple and easy to read.

Randall

Acceptable Use Policy - Terms and Conditions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This acceptable use policy sets out the terms between you and us under which you may access our website http://www.youtsite.com (our site). This acceptable use policy applies to all users of, and visitors to, our site.

- to send, knowingly receive, upload, download, use or re-use any material which does not comply with our content standards.
- to transmit, or procure the sending of, any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising or promotional material or any other form of similar solicitation (spam).

Where we do provide any interactive service, we will provide clear information to you about the kind of service offered, if it is moderated and what form of moderation is used (including whether it is human or technical).

We will do our best to assess any possible risks for users (and in particular, for children) from third parties when they use any interactive service provided on our site, and we will decide in each case whether it is appropriate to use moderation of the relevant service (including what kind of moderation to use) in the light of those risks. However, we are under no obligation to oversee, monitor or moderate any interactive service we provide on our site, and we expressly exclude our liability for any loss or damage arising from the use of any interactive service by a user in contravention of our content standards, whether the service is moderated or not.

The use of any of our interactive services by a minor is subject to the consent of their parent or guardian. We advise parents who permit their children to use an interactive service that it is important that they communicate with their children about their safety online, as moderation is not foolproof.
