Hi SI team & fellow S.I.ers

This is perhaps a somewhat philosophical question but…
Why would I want to put every one in a group in my case a user group in one group!

http://finalbug.net/

What are the advantages.
I am wondering if it is a way to tie everything up?!?
Or like putting a roof on a house!?!

e.g. in my case could I do the following:

a) Put every one in a group
b) Have profiles searchable but not viewable
c) Other advantages?!?!?!?!

Would be curious if some one has something to say about this!

thanks

Paul
Hello Paul,

When you mean "group", do you mean Joomla User Group or the Groups in EasySocial?

Hello Paul,

I don't really see a reason for placing everyone on a single group unless you want to hype up a "fan page" or perhaps your "company" or "fan" group.

hi Mark

I guess what I am kind of wondering is could I do the following:

Use the group page as the main page for the Site.
i.e. every one is in the mother of all groups so to speak.
And this is possibly where my understanding breaks down…

If some one posts a Blog it gets posted in the group as every one is in the group.
If some one posts in the Easy Social Stream it gets posted in the group as every one is in the group.
I would image the same would apply for Easy Discuss (currently not on my site)

etc

Further I could use the applications like:

Discussions
Members
News
Tasks
Feeds
Events

To tie things up!

In other words, a summary of the group. Every thing on one page.

Maybe I am way of track here…
Maybe this is just the stream in a group...
Just trying to get my head around this!

At the end of the day all I want is interaction. Or in a word "Synergy"
best

Hello Paul,

I am sorry for the delayed response.

Perhaps you can share your idea in our easysocial voices page, http://stackideas.com/voices/easysocial and see how people will respond to the idea? If everything goes well with enough vote, we will consider to implement this idea.

Hi Paul,

I had this idea also few months before which I actually executed but regretted after I have added 600+ users (forcefully though) into one group Like you have mentioned when someone post something in the timeline everybody in the group will be notified. It came to me that not all people would want to be notified or receive an email and take note, if just 5 people or less will chat on the group timeline, imagine the reaction of those 595 users who gets annoyed with all the email notification in their inbox. :P I immediately removed those users in the group, fortunately ES Group does not send notification to users when they are added or removed by an admin.

I guess it will work if ES notification configuration can be set in a Group settings and users can set their notification preferences per Group. For example, if a Group I am a member are too chatty, I will have a choice to not notify me from this particular group only.

But if your purpose of adding all your users into one group is to notify them all together, then it will work

If your purpose of adding people to a group is because you want to notify them of a certain activity, I think Broadcast will do the trick.

I have mentioned this before in one of my post but Mark and his team are busy completing the basic ES features, maybe in the future . The idea is to add administrative features to ES, meaning tools for administrators and not for end users. Tools like tagging profiles depending on profile field data. For example, I would like to notify all users that are age 25-30 of this blog that I am posting or posted because it is applicable to them. Or I could tagged all profiles that are women age 45-50 and I could send them conversation message or maybe invite them to a Group. Or I could tagged all profiles that are 5 miles radius from me so I can invite them to see this new product or join/check out my Group. Tagging might be a wonderful tool that admins would love. What do you think?

Thanks,

Jackson

Hi Jackson

Sorry about the late reply. I was out of town
I hear what you are saying about every one getting notified and getting pissed off.
I had a similar experience. I guess that it was in conjunction with Broadcast.
There was a problem with a Cron Job which was then fixed.
Overnight I sent out 100´s of notifications to 800 users
i.e. a back log of posts in the stream

If I understand the current state of play we can now post blog posts from a group.
It looks as if we might be able to post stream stuff in the stream very soon…

I guess what I was thinking and am thinking more and more is that a group can be a landing page!
On the one hand I can tell my members about in my case the latest developments in the world of video editing.
On the other hand I have those Applications on the left hand side of the Group page.
So for e.g. there is one called “Discussions” which I could for e.g. use to discuss the internal working of the group with members.
That could mean something as simple as should the Site be green or maybe blue.
Or something more profound like do we want to cover for e.g. online video applications from You Tube through to Facebook.
In all fairness I have to admit that I have little or no experience with “Easy Discuss.”
(A full blown Easy Discuss is for me at this moment in time over kill)
And then there are other Applications which may not even have seen the light of day yet.
So for e.g. in my case I have people with different skills and different addresses.
Why not an application like find me someone with skills XYZ within 100 km of me!
I could go on for ever….

I get what you are saying about the notifications over dose.
There definitely needs to be the possibility to filters who hears what.
I guess that their are as many different ways to do this as to skin a cat.

This is me thinking aloud here:

Split the members down the middle

Active members/Passive members

Passive members:

Send passive members a Facebook like message e.g. 4 times a year
Similar to a newsletter
Whilst you were away this and that happened
And these guys became friends etc

Active members:

Send active members updates from the stream/blog etc

Now this is mad but you could even have an information slider.
Like how much info can I take.
How much passivity/activity!

Link this all into the points system and it could be a motor that drives the Site!

I guess it will work if ES notification configuration can be set in a Group settings and users can set their notification preferences per Group. For example, if a Group I am a member are too chatty, I will have a choice to not notify me from this particular group only.

Almost ;-)
Kind of like the chicken and the egg!
IMHO the group needs to be split much as one splits an atom.

Am curious what you might have to say to this

best

Hello Paul,

Thank you for raising your concerns regarding this matter. I believe what you are saying is indeed correct and nothing to argue about. Hopefully we will be able to realize it and bring easysocial to a whole new level of socialization somewhere in the future.
