There's a couple of reasons behind this and most importantly, it was due to the fact that EasyBlog includes it's own updater service since the Joomla 1.5.x era. Earlier, there wasn't an updater system in Joomla 1.5 and we had to build one ourselves. Other reasons includes:

1. Our updater does a proper diff between files and only send the files that are modified / changed from your current release to the latest release.
2. We are able to control each ajax requests made to the server to avoid any php timeout issues.
