What is Feedburner?

This might sound like a dumb question however there \are many instructions on how to ssetup feedburner (no in stackideas docs though) but no one every says why you should use it and what exactly it does.

Can you guys just give me a quick description of what Feedburner does and why I should use it?

Some people still uses it, not entirely sure why but if I recall correctly, Google is planning to shut it down.
