Hi there,

I am doing the Dutch translation locally but today I checked the number of language strings of en-GB.com_easysocial.ini (site) of version 1.2.14 and I was blown away of the number of new language strings compared to version 1.2.1. Version 1.2.1 has 2753 language strings and version 1.2.14 has 6473 language strings.

What has happened between those versions? Are those actually new language strings or will a lot of them be dropped again with later versions? Or did you combine several language files into that en-GB.com_easysocial.ini file?

Regards,
Ewoud

Ps. @Mark, maybe you remember but I am doing a different Dutch translation then the official one on Transifex as I need a lot of different Dutch words, That is why I am not using the Transifex version.
I so not want to speak for the Stackideas team, but it is my understanding that to optimize site performing they are merging several files into one file. Check if the strings that have been added are strings that you previously have seen in other files... or wait for mark to answer ;-)

Yep, Jannik is correct. We had to merge all language files to improve about 60% of the load time So you might need to update your translation files or re-download the translation file again.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply and explanation. Improving load time is always a big plus .

@Mark, is it possible to let me know which files you merged? Is it all the frontend EasySocial language files (com_easysocial and all mod_ language files)? Or also some of the administrator language files (apps and fields)?

You do know that you can maintain your own translation on transifex right
Just start a new project, and maintain the source file. Its not a rocket science.
I do my own translations like that for the same reasons that i cant make official translation due the customized and site specific words, though, not yet for ES, me and my team still discovering this component, however, the era of maintaining plain text file is long time gone... You should really do it on transifex, within your own project.

Thanks for sharing Darko but if you translate it within EasySocial's projects, it would allow you to install through the languages area at the back end of EasySocial.

Ewoud,

The files that are merged is mostly those language files plg_app_xxx and plg_fields_xxx and it is merged into the front end language file.

@Darko, I just dived into creating my own project on Transifex, and it's indeed not rocket science. But after uploading the frontend en-GB.com_easysocial.ini file I saw there are already 27,483 words in that single file. Taking a look at the plans and pricing, it means I need at least the Plus membership which is a whooping 99 dollars a month, 1200 dollars a year. That is a lot of money for something that is just a hobby and doesn't generate income. How do you do that?

@Mark, thanks for letting me know. Hopefully this will shorten the time for me in updating the translation files. And you mention that it is better to translate within EasySocial projects, but that is probably Darko's problem as well, there are already translators for his and mine language, but they use different translation words then the ones we need. A couple of months ago I tried to pursuade you to add a second Dutch language, remember . That was for the exact same reason.

@Mark, sometimes one need translation that is specific for the site or the project that has been worked on and official translation can not be used.
How we did it in the past was to maintain our own translation files in a plain .ini file and every major update was real pain because we had to manually find all the differences and apply them properly. For example, in the past, we had requests to change all references to wall, stream and activities to "pulse". You can not get that with official translation, hance the custom one has to be created.
How things are, i can still see many translators that need custom or site specific translations still do the thing wrongly, and still maintaining the plain .ini file which is a nightmare when big update comes.

@Ewoud, sorry to hear that, unfortunately, i wasn't aware how big translation file is. Like i said, i still don't have any requirements or need to use easysocial, and all i know about it is what i can see on demo and reading what i see here. I was merely sharing my experience, but hearing how big file is now, its a bad news

@Ewoud, i have just tried that and it indeed wantes me to pay a lot for maintaining translation file.
However, and this is not really nice i managed to "trick" them... In fact, probably use some bug in their system

What i did, is to put the 1.2.13 langauge file as a source.
Then i translated few strings...
After that, i updated source file with the one from 1.2.14 and whooooopss. i just kind of exploited them

Not feeling good about it, but hey, i was just using the site right

Hi Darko,

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I do not have version 1.2.13. You probably used that at first because it is below the 15.000 words? Anyway, I contacted the guys at Transifex because on their Q&A page they suggest to contact them in situations like this. I just received an email back that they want to Skype and offer me a price of 19 dollars for the plus plan. Still a lot of money for something that is just a hobby, but I really hope that Mark will try that something else in the near future so I do not need to pay transifex for it anymore.
