Hey guys,

As most of you may have noticed, the forum looks and layout has changed and we are trying to reorganize the forums quite a bit. Most of these changes that you see here would eventually end up in EasyDiscuss 4.0.

Here, I would like to gather for feedback from you as a user that uses our forum about how this new layout works for you.
Hi Mark,

1) What I dislike and improvements:

1.1 - What I miss the most is a "list all recent topics / list all latest activities" menu link (the previous design landing page). It was nice to see all activities and find interesting topics you would like to read or join, now you have to browse and browse and browse that is really not user friendly!

1.2 - 10 topics per page in the subcategories is not enough 20 would be better or let the front user decide the list lengths, e.g. a small dropdown selection list 5,10,15,20,25 per page.

1.3 - In small screens the columns are not nicely rendered. The topic name column is very (too) small and the posting time column is too large. If possible I would prefer to "merge and stack" the first two columns eg for smaller displays: 3 main columns instead of 4, the first column stacks the topics title and under the title the posting time, then second and third columns posted by/Last replied.

1.4 - Approximately at tablet size window the vertical separator line between the menus does not touch the bottom border if the menu title is not 2 lines (Bookmarks/Subscriptions)

1.4 - The toolbar is not responsive, Subscriptions and Edit Profile disappear

2) Considering ED 4.0
2.1 - The colors and icons look great. Will the admin be able to set the images / icons font set themselves for container categories/categories/topics...?

2.2 - A nice feature would be the possibility to choose a background color for the categories header (one by one in the specific category creation/edit page)

2.3 - Maybe a toolbar like ES1.4 would help to have a clean and consistent design. English terms are usually small words but other languages use more characters or even 2 or 3 words to say the same...think about it please.

These are my first impressions, others may come later

You have configuration issues !

I just posted this topic and it is listed nowhere, you should disable post creation on some categories or force to choose a subcategory !

It is not possible to edit my previous post...
Ok it seems to be a "use and get used to it" issue.
It was not clear where the Main Container topics were listed..

Use it and get used to it ....

Another point...
Because I could not edit a reply above I tried to edit this previous one.
If I click "Edit" the message is:
Unable to load composer.
It might be your permission configuration / a grace time for editing or ?bug?
Correct behavior or not, it is reported...

Hi Mark,

100% better!

It used to frustrate me that I couldn't view all my old topics as once you clicked on the next page (in my topics) it used to take me back to All topics.

Much more user friendly

Hi guys.
One thing I put in voices a while back was the ability to allow for "bounties" to be put on questions by using points accrued in EasySocial. It would be a great way to reward question respondents with points. In essence, the question poser would assign a price in points for an accepted answer which would get rewarded as points to the person who answered the question!

Hey @Mark, Christmas in October!

  • Love the changes, particularly: subscriptions, bookmarks and site details.
  • For bookmarks, I already have categorized bookmarks in Chrome, it'd be nice if ED bookmarks allowed for categorization by user
  • Agree with @Dave on bounty, check out explanation at Stack Overflow
  • Great if ED menu allowed incl/excl categories, & # posts to show.
  • Create Follow capability so I could click a "Follow" button and see where others are contributing (shared interests, problems, market domains, etc). In the "old" format, I'd always read posts from particular contributors (like those already in this list, active contributors with insight, experience to learn from.

Gotcha! Give me a little while to clear off those junks! Right now we're archiving those old posts as they seem to be irrelevant anymore.

Thanks for the heads up on this Eileen. "Follow" is actually the same as "Subscribe" when you view a particular thread

- Love the new layout and color scheme.
- Everything is more condensed and easier to read. Topics are taking way too much height in ED3, this is much better!!!

- In my opinion it's missing the "unresolved" "resolved" and "unanswered" filters on the frontpage. That was supper handy.

Very happy in general where ED is going!

Nice job

LOOKS FANTASTIC!!!

I feel that after many scripts toyed with new concepts, there seems to be a move back to traditional forums as it is just what users expect,, traditional forums works as the users minds expect an online discussion thread to function,, logical. And while ED is an amazing script, what I am seeing here is far more organized. Good Job!!

****,, now I am gunna have to get rid of Kunena - I hope there will be a migration tool???? LOL thanks!

Hi Mark,

Nice new forum

Just a little feedback, on the forum landing page where the Categories are listed. IMO, it would be best to provide user preference of which Category goes first. For example, if I don't have subscription for ES but I have one for EB then I would want EB to be the first I see. Or in my case, I have most of your components but I want ES to be the first (well below Announcements).

Just a thought.

Thanks,

Jackson

The landing page actually respects your category ordering at the back end currently but we'll see what we can do in the future to enhance this.

For EasyDiscuss 4, we plan to have both the "flat list layout" as well as the "forums layout" as what you can see here

Robert wrote:

The pinter theme in ED will still be column based theme but I am not too sure how it would work on a forum layout as it would be extremely "bulky"

Mark,
What about a multiple quote button... and quote selected text button ?
If there is a possibility to kind of highlight a message or highlight its borders when scrolling and when you click the multiple quote button in the fixed toolbar it adds the highlighted message in the composer...
scroll & click, scroll & click, scroll & click, voilĂ  all quotes are already in the composer when I scroll to the bottom of the page !
Nice isn't it

Fabulous remodeling work of EasyDiscuss! A few things I'd like to note:

  • I cannot edit my forum posts on other people's forum posts. For example I cannot edit this very post. But I can edit my own topics and the replies I make on my own topics. Same goes for deleting posts.

  • I can edit other people's posts on my own topic! I just found this out as I was typing the above message. Users should never be able to edit other user's post when they are not a moderator.

  • Attached to this post is a screen shot showing a permissions issue on an EasySocial post (text removed from image for sizing reasons). I think this might be related to when you guys are "Offline". I had access to that thread during support hours, did not during your non work hours, and now have access to it again.

  • Updating your own original topic no longer has a cancel button. Minor, but still worth noting.

  • As mentioned above, having the filters before was a great idea. I miss them already. Attached to this post is two screen shots showing a simplified header that I drew up in FireBug. One is desktop view, the other is mobile. While I enjoy the current theatrics being used for your guy's status, the header could be simplified even more. In my version it not only uses less space but gives the user more freedom of choice like before.

As mentioned before, it's difficult to see all the newest posts for a product. For example I used to be able to see all the new posts for EasySocial. Now in order to do this I need to navigate within each individual category to see the latest posts which is a bit trickier. While to your average customer this sounds like no big deal, however I like to keep track of some issues that go on as well as feature requests.

Perhaps it could be done from a filter, the right side menu (a sub menu called "All" under EasySocial), or even a link such as http://stackideas.com/forums/easysocial/latest

As for the "Announcements", in the future I suggest you display 3 of the latest announcements while displaying everything else as normal. This would not only make it easier to access the categories but would prevent you from needing to clear out announcements as you did recently. After all, they are posted that often (and they shouldn't be either).

Mark,
I did not renew my ED subscriptions because there were important lack of or not adapted features/options/layout etc. I decided not to use it anymore and to not renew but use a competitor's component.

Until now I considered ED more a support component than a really versatile support/forum/Q&A component.

This new layout captured my interest again but there are some points I would like you to clarify.
A. The old layout was a custom styled theme only for your website. Will this one be a new theme included in ED 4.0 or again yours only?
B. Customization is not part of your support but you still receive tons of request for custom styling. Will you add more styling parameters to this new theme so customers can differentiate themselves from other website using ED 4.0?
C. Will you add the same language selector like in EB5?
D. Do you have an ETA for the ED 4.0 beta issue tracker? I'd like to participate, I am curious to discover the modifications and the new features.
E. I'd like to renew my subscription for ED but it has to match my needs (ED3 does not), What if I renew and then see it is "still not" what I expect?

hi

nice remodelling of ED

Before moving from kunena to ED4 i am waiting for :

- the ability to integrate attached photo INSIDE the post text
could be super great to integrate with ES photoalbums...

- ability not to use "resolved" in some categories that are not Q&A, but just forum discussions

- "last topics" menu

- migrator that keep category and post id to be able to write 310 redirection script for all kunena url (not to miss google ref)

and could be super great to strongly integrate with ES and for example not allow a user i blocked (from ES) to also be blocked in my forum topics...

looking forward to dev from the awesome stackidea team

I just subscribed to a thread the "new" way, very nice. But, I realized in doing so that I couldn't see who else was following the thread which had been a useful way to see who else was participating in a discussion and prompt other interactions with them. So from that I'd suggest it could be useful to add some capability to "see who's subscribing".

For large website it can be tricky to list hundreds of subscriber nicely...
I suggest a separate module and/or e.g.: in the fixed toolbar "Subscribers", it opens a popup inside which you can scroll the subscribers and interact with them for example view profile/send message...

Really, really good! This could make me change from phpBB. Especially the module with categories on the right is really great.

Over all: more informations on one page. In my opinion, this makes it easier to handle big boards.

phpBB has offers user-notes. This is somethin, we really use very often. It something like this would exist ... ;-)

I agree, and their updates take too long when a new forum version is made available.
Fully responsive and well designed templates is the way to go in my opinion

Do you plan on letting all users see those filter for ED 4.0?

I see a lot of advantage of keeping quick and basic frontpage filter available to all users:

- in a forum where there are no moderators, where each and every users help each other, it is super important for every one to easily have access to a list of post that have no reply or that are still not answered.

- Been able to easily (with Ajax filters) filter post by popularity and date is key too.

I would personally add "my post" and "bookmarked post" as filters too, not layout, but actual frontpage ajaxed filter like "Unresolved", "Resolved", "Unanswered" filters in ED 3.0.

Those filters were quite amazing, it would be a shame to let them go. At least keep a ON/OFF feature in the backend?

Last thing, one feature that I really liked in old forums was to be able to see a list of "threads with new reply since last login". Those were pretty sweet! As filter, it would just be craaaazyyyyy ;-)

Big love to you all for what you're doing! <3

Please do not forget the "hot & popular topics" tab and module !
We can imagine an option to filter them : when number of replies is XX in last XX time then topic is hot !

I noticed the "Resolved" posts don't show the date of the accepted answer.
This can be a major issue because there is no way to know if the answer was accepted before or after the last messages in the topic.
Example
If there is no date in the accepted answer, you copy a given code to your website.
But the correct and updated answer might be in one of the last answers that is not the accepted answer listed on top...
See what I mean ?

Overall, This is a good direction and in line with what I consider an ideal forum homepage. One that would put EasyDiscuss in higher consideration as a class A forum software.

Specifically, I like
- The clean interface
- The list of categories and dropdown as a module on the right
- The avatar posted /last replied feature

What I’ll like to see
- A flat structure that lists all recent latest topics together, and have categories as a filter/column instead of grouping items by category. Otherwise, users will tend to interact only in the top-listed categories listed. Alternatively, allow site admins to make a choice of a flat structure versus a category structure.
- Also, find a simple way to show stats without the elaboration of the current EasyDiscuss.
- Please take a look at what we have here as a potential direction: https://forums.ushahidi.com/
- And here is a screenshot of how we have customized our forum to this end: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/717182/b0792681c2c9d391aee813761d076d0b

- Mobile Style: I agree with the first reply that the mobile style does not look good with the custom styling. Instead, I think you need to put emphasis on the topic title . Here’s a screen shot of the direction I think you need to go: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/717182/b0792681c2c9d391aee813761d076d0b

- ED 4.0: What are the features to expect in ED 4.0? I’m a long-time VB user and can give you a laundry list of desired features that would make ED an exciting alternative.

Hello,

I unsubscribed from this topic, but still receive the notification-emails. In the upper right corner I can read: "subscribe to this thread". So I think, this might be a problem?

Kind regards

Can you include images 'covers' in discussion ? an option to allow uploading images as blog posts covers, i think nicer and beautifull.

Robert,

The reason that we do not implement private messaging is because we cannot moderate replies posted by our moderators.

For instance, if you contact our moderator personally to fix and issue but he ignored your messages in the pm, there is no way for me to follow up with your issues

We need transparency and the best way is to not implement private messaging. If you need to write to us privately, set your forum post as private and all of our moderators will still be able to see your post and the post will only be viewable by yourself only.

That makes sense Mark. Do note that Robert was talking about other members being able to contact other members (non staff). For myself Stackideas members had to contact me through my website. Many people do not link to their website, hence it makes communication a little trickier. One idea is for a profile checkbox option that enables the user to be emailed from other Stackideas members. This way the staff and members who do not want to be contacted have the freedom to not be emailed while still allowing members to privately communicate and share contact info.

I really like how clean this forum is, but honestly, I liked the styling of ED3 too. The "Ask" style gave it an aesthetic appeal that is friendlier than forums that look like tables imo. I can think of a few requests that are both ED related and ES/EB related.

1. Backend styling. For the component, emails, and modules. There are a lot of overrides that need to be created and having the ability to do it in the back end would be better. Not to mention email styling is the pits.

2. Consistency with the styling of ES/EB/ED modules. I'm surprised how different they are for the different component modules and have to create more overrides to make them look similar. Given many of the different component modules will be on the same page, it should look seamless for a professional looking site.

3. Email digest. If I can force subscribe users to a daily/weekly/etc digest, I will increase participation many fold. I think this should be a top priority (especially for ES) as I can't think of a single feature that creates more interaction on a social site and that is what we all buy (awesome) StackIdeas products for.

4. +1 the Bounty feature.

5. Full integration with ES without the use of apps.

Keep up the good work!

p.s. I can confirm "Edit/Update" works fine.

Thanks, Mark!

Agree with all about the look and feel of the new UI.

[*] Bounty: +1 for sure
[*] Ranking: Progressive system preferred over current accumulative scheme
[*] Search/Filter Functionality: Comprehensive filters at multiple levels preferred
[*] Community Builder: Better integration with CB such as feed into activity summary
[*] Group Organization: Provide flexibility for users to organize private groups or tab into GroupJive feature of CB

Hi Mark,
almost i need special glasses to read the text.
"e" and "a" "o" and so on are not good to read because my eyes are not good enough for that small default text.
it is better for me when there are a higher contrast.

Hey Mark,

This new look is really awesome!

One question - will ED 4.x be fully backward compatible with ED 3.x? Will we be able to just install ED 4.x over ED 3.x and expect everything to work just fine? All setting to be kept, all options to be kept, basically everything to be working just fine without any interuptions or modifications needed from the site admin?

Thanks

Hey Ivo,

There will be an "automated" maintenance script that will run during the installer of EasyDiscuss as we have revamped the database structure quite a bit for optimization purposes. Other than that, the settings and existing layouts would still remain in tact.

The new "forum" layout would be the default though as compared to v3 which is the "index" layout.

We are considering this but our main goal for 4.0, is the speed and getting rid of foundry. It's a baby step (trials) before we start applying the same stuff to all of our extensions.

your new forum is pretty well. one thing i discovered yesterday.

I wrote a question with a topic for EB. i dont know why but this topic is now in category ED. I can read my post but not the answers because the forum tells me that i need a valid subscription for ED. I do unterstand this message but this situation is certainly not satisfactory for me.

Is there a way to change my post to the right category? So i can see the answers?
