yes, you are absolutely ride. If I get advised by easysocial customer support to change a file, I always make a copy e.g. backup-items.php. In this case, we changed a view icons. Please make shure file is not overridden by next update.

I see You are most welcome Peter and it is okay as you've awareness of any of possible thing could be happened isn't it(precaution is important if you make any changes/customization in core file)
If there file that can be override in templates folder it is much better if you make customization code, so any update will not effects those file.
