If you had initially configured it to use username, when the user registers, the permalink field will automatically be populated with their username. They need to edit their profile and change their permalink

Can I do it for them in the backend?

Yes, you can edit the user's account from the back end

But you would need to know the users password or assign them a new one, correct? Anyway around that?

You don't really need to set a password if you are editing the user's account from the back end unless you want to reset their password Just leave them blank if you don't want to edit the password
