Unfortunately, we do not have the option to disable this.

The main reason we add this behavior is to let the reader clearly know who is the user replying to, and this will be a similar concept to what you mentioned about someone in the stream.

Yes, it can be useful in some cases for very large communities, such as on Facebook.
But I personally observed that the replies were rarely given to more than two or three interlocutors. It is often a dialogue between two users.
And if they want to address a particular user, they naturally mention the person (like in a real-life debate).

I find this option interesting, and it is undoubtedly beneficial for some users.
Would it be possible to simply disable this feature in the Comments setting ?

(Like in Story Form setting with Display Mentions In Form option)

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to disable this feature through a template override file.

Currently, we will maintain this intended behavior as it is now.
