Hi,

There are some issues.

1. User activity logs. As you know, because of securty and legal issues we have to collect user activities and keep them. I mean, even if they deleted their atvities, messages, status, sharings etc (yes needed more storage for this) we need to keep them. i checked my mysql logs i just saw only message records, but stream and other logs didnt (deleted by users) Am I wrong? it will be perfect if we can see user activites ---like point achivement history--- from our backend, even if they deleted.

2. Full Admin Control from backend Currently we cant see all of user activities, messages etc, its hard to check mysql records to find something.
Hello,

Unfortunately we don't keep a log of this because it will really be extremely huge If the user deletes it, there's no way to discover this currently unfortunately.

Awasome! i will have legal issues i think because of this. Joomla totally has a log records problem... and what about full admin control? Currently we cant see full of a user activities.

Alright, currently there are 4 major problems with security & privacy & legal issues;

1. User Logs
2. Admin Full Control
3. Login spam & bot protection (you can try to log in 10000000000000000000000.. times)
4. User block, ban option (and with Group funtion that will really important problem )

I know, john. I just wanted to underline... Some of the important functions must not be based on user ratings or reviews...

What are the priorities of a good social network?
1- Security
2- Privacy
3- Sharing+conversations , videos, groups, events... 4 main functions
must be given a priority for them ... after those can be add spesific things..

I AM WRONG?

Hello Gokhan,

I am not too sure if it makes sense to have a log system in place with activity streams. You are talking about a system that may generate 100's of new story posts every minute or 1000's of posts every hour. Can you imagine the amount of disk space required for your database? I am not sure what are the implications of not having a proper log from where you are but we'll see what we can do about this in the future.

Hi Mark,

Yes i am aware of this. Of course i need a huge storage. But if you are an owner of a social network, you have many legal responsibilities. So i imagine i will have many problems also, where do i know? Because all of as are using Facebook

For example; I am hoping to get arround 400-600.000 specific community members (in 2 years). And currently my website is the best(usefull, easy, etc), there is no similar one in Turkey. And if you have a look at my website you will see i am trying to make a professional web site. So every "padding" value is important for me. And i hope i will release my beta version in these days (waiting for new theme and group function) And Guys, you are really something!

By the way: I hope you have found a solution for comments on stream. I cant imagine more then 100 comments for a topic Maybe ajax or someting?

Got it, I totally understand what you are trying to achieve but at the same time, we are building software for the masses. When I mean masses, we have hundreds of thousands of Joomla websites which are powered by our extension. If we just decide to leave the data to be collected all the time, I would imagine how heavy these sites would be and they would definitely complaint about this as well.

Thanks for understanding.

As an admin of perhaps the most active mountaineering site of all times I understand your need for keeping records. It serves as evidence and helps the admins figure out who did what in illegal activity.

However we use different methods for keeping track of cyber bullies and such by generating screen shots, having deleted member messages remain, and saving messages. If there was a system log for all the activities, it should be optional and have a warning about how it will use a lot of disk space.

Here's a interesting idea regarding system logging, what if it either saved a new log once per week or month? Then the admin could remove them or take them off the site and save them as a archive. An auto purge system could help make it lighter weight. I'll end by saying I personally don't need this, but it is a interesting idea.

As for videos, groups, events, they are on the way. Perhaps by the end of next month if all goes well you might see those things. Regarding what you mentioned earlier on "Login spam & bot protection": I agree with this. I have a method of combating this which for now I'll keep a secret until ES 1.2 is released. It should be very effective and very easy for the user.

Yes this is a really god idea. We can import logs weekly or mothly, and keep them in somewhere out of our servers. i think max 2-3 GB free space will be enaugh for this

I really wonder how you are compating? You can whisper in my ear, let me try it. Maybe i can improve it

Come on Mark, this can be based on invidual choice with a one click button

My secret method has to do with using human logic rather than auto generated letters that you have to type (which is both annoying and spammers can still get through it). I'll give you a heads up when the new version is out. I gave my word, so I don't want to break my promise. There will be plenty of time between it's proposal and it's potential implementation (if it does get accepted) for discussion on it.

An activity log management is indeed interesting. This, obviously could be optional and you can warn community administrators that it can get very huge.
This is what I think could be useful:

  • Option to turn logging on or off
  • In case you turn it on -> option to auto purge it periodically or purge manually via button
  • Option to generate/export a log file and download or send it to dropbox, S3, email, whatever...
  • Log file could be an XML or CSV or anything else readable or importable

What do you think?
