When you click upload avatar it brings up a box that allows you to click browse to upload a photo. Why not have the upload avatar link go straight to image browse? This is how facebook and many other communities do it. The reason they do it is because it's one less step hence it's simpler to do it in that fashion. Don't get me wrong, the box and the buttons that pop up look beautiful, but we want EasySocial to be as simple and speedy for the user as possible. The text on the popup box says "Select a photo on your computer to upload as your profile avatar". When clicking upload avatar we already know that's what we are doing.

So in short, make it more direct.
Thanks for the input Josh but we actually want the user to crop their photo so that their photo looks better in the community

Absolutely we want the user to be able to crop their photo! I wasn't proposing the removal of that feature.

Why not have the box show up after selecting the picture? While the image is uploading is probably the best time. Or it could even load up in the back as the user is selecting their picture to upload. This idea is about the users convenience.

Of note, I signed up to WebmaisterPro site yesterday (they use EasySocial) and the cover photo I selected must have been huge because it didn't upload - the progress icon cycled forever. I finally clicked the cycling icon and it sent the email.

Some of these new digital cameras have very high resolutions, and if people grab any photo like I did, it can take far too long for people to wait at Registration- but what is the balance. A suggested cover photo size?

Hello Randall,

Hm, perhaps there's some issues with their site. I will try to contact Kal and see.

I asked Kal what version of Easysocial was being used. It appears to be an older version based on the left sidebar issue with a language string messing up the sidebar.

Right now the avatar upload has 6 steps.

1) Press the edit avatar and upload avatar link.

2) Click Browse.

3) Select the Image and click Open.

4) Click Upload.

5) Crop the Avatar.

6) Click Create Avatar

The process however could be simplified to:

1) Press the edit avatar and upload avatar link.

2) Select the Image and click Open.

3) Click Create Avatar

Now I know we want to be able to crop the avatar, but right now it forces the user to crop the photo even if they don't want to. So why not allow the user to crop the photo if they want or simply proceed to create avatar if they want it as is. Also step two and four can be cut out because it is another "browse" feature which could be integrated into step 1. When viewing the image box to select what image you want it already has a cancel button as well.

I'm glad that one of the steps for the avatar process has been "taken out" (as in not forced upon the user). As of right now we went from 6 steps to 5 which is good. But we can drop it down to 3. See this post to see how to cut out two steps.

The Gist:

Remove this step:

And this step:

This will simplify the uploading avatar process. The box that allows you to crop the photo should appear right after the user selects the photo and clicks the "open" button. This way we would still get exactly what we want. Removing the two steps does not reduce any features to uploading photos.

Thanks for the heads up on this Josh, we cannot promise that this will be added into the next release but we'll see what can be done to optimize this.

Sounds good Mark. I have a little over a week of free time right now and the weather is bad for mountain climbing. So I should probably work on figuring out the best display method for the gallery and of course actually have it coded so the stacked team can see. So in other words I hope to help you guys make the gallery better as my gift to you guys for doing a great job.
