Upgrading issue

I'm trying to upgrade on my local host from 1.3.11 to latest, and the inbuilt update installer is throwing error:
Please download the new launcher from our site at http://stackideas.com/dashboard

while upgrading to 1.3.11 from earlier version, i also faced the same issue, i downloaded the complete package, and put it in tmp folder and installed on top.

Is the above method safe? will it delete any of my old data?

Sorry for late reply to this,
First when you do the updating, it will not affect with your data.
It will just update all the Easysocial file to be latest one, which means that if you have do some customization file and doing the updating, then your customization file will become original file.

If you're using second method install from directory, this method also will be safe, don't worry.
