Hey guys,

I'm currently stuck between making an important decision for my site. A little back story first:

I transitioned over to EasySocial from phpFox. If you're familiar with phpFox, you'll know that they had included a video section that allows members to share/upload videos all connected to their profile. Before my transition, I have had a lot of members share videos to my site. Currently, all the links (either from search engines or back links) that visitors are clicking on are leading to a 404 page, which is expected. I'd like to remedy this as soon as possible.

My issue? Well, do I wait for EasySocial to release 1.3.0. that will include the video section? According to the Roadmap, this section hasn't been started yet. To go this route, I'd need a really close estimate on when to expect the video feature to become available.

Or:

I spoke with "Apptha" the developer for HDVideoShare and they're planning to integrate with EasySocial at some point, I just can't get a when. They also, will do custom work for me to integrate at an additional cost. HDVideoShare is already $150 then I'll have to account for the cost of custom development which I have not received an estimate for yet.

Routes I could take:
I could wait for the EasySocial team to release 1.3.0. with the video feature.
I could just use HDVideoShare and not integrate with EasySocial for the time being until they release an official release that includes integration
Purchase HDVideoShare plus custom development.

I'm leaning towards using HDVideoShare as I can begin fixing my 404'd video links immediately but am willing to wait a little while (few more weeks) until EasySocial 1.30...As having all of my components/sections within 1 developer is much preferred.

What would you guys recommend?
Hi Sean,

We're using HWDMediaShare in our website and it worked just fine but since we don't need the social feature that it comes with it I disabled all of it. I'm also waiting for ES Video feature patiently and hoping it will be a much better Media page to replace HWDMediaShare later. Less components you got installed in your website means less conflicts and it loads faster, saying that is based on my experience since we have like almost 10 components installed. I have to tweak some so it does not conflict with others. HWD is a good component, don't get me wrong but I would choose to have one component that can do multiple things so users will have to land in one place and be able to navigate from within instead of clicking for a Menu item to go from Feature to feature.

I hope ES Video will be more like Groups where Site Admin can Create Categories just like HWDMediashare and would be a plus if they add Audio (MP3, etc.) not just Video

I also hope ES will have a slider module for Video with thumbnails below just like what Vimeo has here: http://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks. In HWDMediashare they created this for Images but they did not for Video, I have to create my own module by hijacking their code when viewing video in Slideshow mode. They already did it but they didn't thought of creating a module to show video as slideshow.

So, for me I will wait for ES Video and hope that it will replace HWDMediashare.

Thanks,

Jackson

Gauging from the roadmap I suspect ES 1.3 to be out sometime around mid to late June. HDVideoShare was very high on my watch list, and to be honest it still kinda is. However the stacked team not only produces great results, but has given me great assurance with the quality of the photo gallery. Yes it still needs work, but as of right now it has the best uploading system I have seen in the Joomla universe! There is no doubt that they will produce a great video system as well.

What you have to ask yourself:

  • Do I have the money to throw down for HDVideoShare and the Custom Development

  • Am I satisfied/excited with the results of HDVideoShare as is? Not to say they don't keep adding things, but the rapid rate the ES is getting all the bells and whistles is very assuring.

If the answer is no to any of these, I'd say wait for ES 1.3. The final question is can your video project wait possibly until June, possibly early July for ES 1.3? Answering these questions will help you figure out the proper solution.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a lot to think over. Tough decision to make! I'll more than likely stick it out. Mark, do you have any idea what the video section will be like yet? Any idea on layout design? Any info at all on what we could expect?

I was in a similar position to you a little while back, only my dilemma was based around events.

A few questions you should ask yourself:

1. How important are those link backs from search engines? If they are important, waiting for ES Video could cost you as your bounce rate for video links will go sky high.

2. If your site is commercial, will it cost you money by not having videos now?

3. Will you start to lose visitors/members?

For me, I decided that I trust the Stack guys to come up with the goods, but this will take time. 1.2 was a big update and to give you an idea, I seem to recall that it was in beta/release candidate stages for around four weeks. Add to that the two weeks or so it took to iron out the major bugs (it's a dream now)

Based in the above, the estimate stated earlier of end if June, beginning of July is probably about right, as things like Events and Videos alone is going to be a lot of work.

I decided to do something in the interim to fulfil the need for events. I decided to use Jreviews, which powers the other half if my website anyway, so there was no additional cost and I knocked up something in a few days.

Maybe you could take the same approach. Have you looked at free or low coat alternatives to use in the interim? Something like AllVideos might work for you, I don't know. But at least if you get something useable up, you can at least keep your users and the google machine happy!

Video uploading is postponed to ES 1.4. This was done to make the release cycle faster. Events ought to hold some of us over. Pardon my short response, surgery has put me down to a single finger! I use caps lock to capitalize letters. My pain killers are making me dizzy too.

Hello Kurt,

As Josh mentioned, we have postponed the videos functionality to EasySocial 1.4 instead

Hello. Any updates on Easysocial 1.4 VIDEOS support? I see the roadmap text hasn't changed in ages, and still says un-started.

thanks

EasyBlog 5 is planned first. So if you want a true indicator for ES 1.4, when EB5 is fully released videos will be in the working. Many of us our patiently waiting, I just hope things are going well on the Stacked team's end.

I have a question for this. I switched from Jomsocial to easysocial. My users have used the video section and shared there videos from youtube and so on. When the video function is in es can i import from js? As now i dont delete the JS tables in the database. Or is this import not planned? Then i can delete all old data.

Hi Ronny Wunderlich,

Sorry for late reply to this,

Yes, if you upload the local video in your Jomsocial, you have to backup with your current Jomsocial database table first (Dont delete the table first), because video data is not included the part of Jomsocial migration yet.

If we already implement this in 1.4 video stuff, then we can start do the migration again from your previous Jomsocial video data.
