Uploading photos from desktop or mobile phone return the error "Unable to parse server response" when uploading a photo to activity stream. No updates or changes of any sort were done to the site, it worked, then just stopped working essentially, the next day. Updated EasySocial to 4.08 and Joomla to 3.10.4 (today) to try to fix it. php memory limit was updated to 128MB today from 64MB, still no change, photos upload black and are unable to post and returns error.
Hello Jeffrey,

Can you provide the access to your backend and FTP so that we could troubleshoot the issue on your site?

Hello Jeffrey,

Thanks for the access. I tried to upload photo on your activity stream and I didn't face any error. https://take.ms/8Kb3a . Am I missing anything? Perhaps, you could provide us the photo you are trying to upload so that we could test with that exact photo.

Still have errors, it worked for a few days and now photos uploaded appear as a black bar or a box - even profile photos and background photos. Admin and FTP access still available.

Hello Jeffrey,

I tested with stream photo upload as well as avatar and cover upload, all working fine
https://take.ms/1K258
https://take.ms/aDCB1

Can you provide us the photo you were trying to upload? So that we can narrow it down to what may causing the issue.

I don't have the photo as a member uploaded the photo from a mobile device - the member attempted to update the profile and cover photo and they both appear black: natechunn.jpg

Hello Jeffrey,

the member attempted to update the profile and cover photo and they both appear black
- Other than that member, is anyone else can replicate the issue? Or even better if you could replicate the issue, we could get the sample photo that was uploaded.

By the way, I tried to access your site and I am getting this: https://take.ms/VxspK

I can try to get the photo and background photo from them - but that error on the site happens every hour during development because the server surpasses the 16,000 hourly commands (EasySocial runs pretty heavy on the server during development), but during normal usage, it's great...it's wonderful. Maybe it's because I'm developing so much in the backend that the front end encounters errors...maybe I need to slow it down. Not sure yet...

Hello Jeffrey,

Thanks. I am able to replicate the issue on your site. I believe the issue has something to do with the photo dimension is too high. The solution is either to increase to a higher memory_limit (512MB) or reduce the size of the photo.

I don't think that's the answer - as soon as I bumped the memory_limit from 512M to 1000M, the site went down instantly and error returned: Error: Failed to start application: User 'jeff' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 150000)

Hey there,

I am sorry for the delayed of this reply, we are still investigating this issue and currently still haven't found any clue yet, so far this issue has only happened on your site.

The reason why we suggested you increase your site PHP memory_limit early is that when the system proceeds the image resize that moment will spend a lot of memory, so if the image dimension is large, it needed more memory to proceed.

Can you consult with your Webhosting provider and see if you set the PHP memory_limit to 1000MB on the server, is it allow the site to use all the memory or only can use around 70%?

I asking this is because I had encountered some issues even you can set a very high memory_limit value from your server but your server only allows the site to use maybe around 60% memory.

And I also noticed that you are using web server apache/2 with FastCGI, can you consult with your Webhosting provider and see if the FastCGI configuration there can set memory limit?

as soon as I bumped the memory_limit from 512M to 1000M, the site went down instantly and error returned: Error: Failed to start application: User 'jeff' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 150000)

Have you still encountered this issue again once you change your site memory limit on the server? Because I can able to load your site now.

I was able to upload a big batch of photos, high res, to a photo gallery "Hawaii - 2009" without any problems - however, when attempting to upload any photos 2 days later, either from my phone or emailing those photos to my laptop, still receive "Unable to parse server response". Tried to lower the quality from Highest to High in the backend under photos, but no result yet. I wonder if there is something in the cache not properly clearing?

Update: uploading a photo comment on Stream, works fine...but can't post any photos to the stream, or anywhere else on the site (groups, pages) - results "Unable to parse server response" - we are getting closer...

Hey there,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it was the weekend for us here.

I was able to upload a big batch of photos, high res, to a photo gallery "Hawaii - 2009" without any problems - however, when attempting to upload any photos 2 days later, either from my phone or emailing those photos to my laptop, still receive "Unable to parse server response".

Can you recall whether you have changed any configuration on your server since you mentioned that it worked fine previously but only happen recently?

Update: uploading a photo comment on Stream, works fine...but can't post any photos to the stream, or anywhere else on the site (groups, pages) - results "Unable to parse server response" - we are getting closer...

The reason why it worked fine when you upload the same photo in the comment section is that the system doesn't proceed with the image resizing to the large and thumbnail variation (screenshot: https://monosnap.com/file/Z8dJtwee9jQs79Gj42a7laOzDDh6xf ), so it doesn't use much memory during this upload photo process from the comment.

If you compare the process when the user uploads the photo from the stream or album part, the system will proceed with the image resize (screenshot: https://monosnap.com/file/yyQpeo8niqBjlgdnaCKtL7xKMNSpu6 ) so it will not always load the original image file size when you load the webpage, it might affect the page performance issue since each of the image files sizes more than 1MB.

By the way, have you consulted with your Webhosting provider as I mentioned in my previous reply yet https://stackideas.com/forums/unable-to-parse-server-response-uploading-photo#reply-571632 ?
