I have tried this locally but I can't seem to reproduce this issue. Is it possible for you to provide us with the back end and FTP access to your site to check on this issue?

Not easily as I have two firewall's on the site to stop access to the backend and ftp, I've since tried deleting the announcements in all the standard browsers and got the same error message, I'm going to try one more thing first, and that's changing the template as the site template is Joomla 2.5 based which has been tweaked so it will work on Joomla 3, have downloaded the Wanderers template from here, so will try that and see if I'm still getting the same error message.

The cause of the problem is my site template, I've just finished installing the wanderers template, still got lots of menus, etc to put back, but I've just tried editing an announcement and then deleting it and both worked OK.
