this api message is unfortunately misleading, the real reason why the updater failed is that you're on 3.8.x and the latest version is 3.9.x
in general the internal updater only works as long as you're on the same branch number. so if you'd be on an older 3.9 version you could now update automatically to the latest 3.9. the same will happen again when you're on 3.9 and the official stable is labeled 4.x

for now the only way to upgrade is to do this manually - so you'd have to download the latest easyblog package from your dashboard and then install it via the joomla extension manager.
