Greetings support,

In trying to change the profile type for my main user 'Raymond Morris', I am encountering some problems.

1st it does seem possible to do this from backend as they is no such field/parameter
2- In the front end when I change on change profile types, it refreshes my profile back to view mode, so that does work either.

Please help or fix

Yes it is possible to do this(switch profile type) from the back-end(attached).

Not sure what you mean by view mode. Perhaps you can provide us the link of this view mode? Does the purge SEF suggestion from this thread addresses your issue?
