Can you please explain what the difference is between Popup and Inline with regards to timeline truncation?

Inline display style means the location will appear on the stream instead of a popup. It is not related to the truncation.

I tried both but I didn't see any difference.

Can you show me the difference via a quick video or screenshots?

Now that you brought this up, I finally recall that this option is to fix issues with OSM. OSM does not allow static linking to their tile servers. Therefore using inline will render the interactive map, https://take.ms/z7dBH which they allow.
