Initially we did thought about merging them all but it would cause complications and an extremely heavy SQL query to achieve this. It probably will (unless optimized correctly) cause a slow sql query and that eats up the CPU and memory of the site. After taking these into consideration, we decided not to pursuit this because it's a pretty risky gamble.

Perhaps now that more sites are already generating more notifications / friend requests / conversations, we'll see if we can run some trial and error in the future but of course, I definitely prefer to have a global notification rather than a separated one.
