This is why modules in my opinion are the future of true control over layout display. I wanted to have a menu next to my notifications module, so what I did was code a module position into my template that goes right next to the notifications module. This requires two modules total and some CSS coding. However if your template allows two objects to slide next to each other, it may be even easier than my description.
