Hi Everybody,

There are a lot of profile type, activity company, product type, ... Instead to get one million categories in your easysocial, with a big big category tree module with all categories; a Tag system, as virtual category, lets users to find a company page or product with keyword search (search by tag) or Tag Field.

For a developper, instead to fill in one million of categories in easysocial page, profile type, group, or event, ... Users could create (for example) a page with his own professionnal tag (virtual category) for his product or activity and be searchable by everyone by keywords.

For example, If I am a plumber; users will be able to find me with these tag words "Plumbing", "Water Heater Installation/Repair" or "Heating & Air Conditioning/HVAC".

It would be really tricky to manipulate something (custom fields) that are not meant to be tags and forcefully use it as tags. It sounds interesting but it is and going to bite us on the back.

1. When you use custom fields as tags, searching will be a performance misery.

2. Linking to tags would be a complete mess (there are no permalinks for custom fields)

3. Advanced search needs to be hacked to exclude these fields

There are a lot more that I cannot think right now.

Since a long time, I had got a problem with Event, Group or Page about exploitation.

In my case:
In Groups, my categories are Business, health, science & tech...
In Events, my categories are General automobile, Tourism & travel...
In Pages, my categories are "Business or Brand" and "Community or Public Figure".

If a company create an event to promote a tradeshow about camping car (...travel trailers, SUV, Tow vehicle, automobile parts, car accessories, tool, all travel & recreational vehicles . This event should be find in "General Automobile" category and "Tourism and Travel" category.

At this time multi-category is not possible. I think, It's not professional. What do you propose for helping us?

Indeed, There have been some improvements. But functionalities are always the same.

For instance, why have you create ES "advertisements"?

Ok, you have an advertisement in the middle of the stream but it's not SocialAds from Techjoomla.

Your ES "advertisements" improvement is incomplete. We have to sell manually this advertisement (not interesting), there is no statistic to show to the owner compaign to get an idea to renew, etc...

I reproach you for relying on your achievements.

I think you have to create a Dashboard with all requests from your customers and make a classification in order depending priority ( for example: essential to superfluous).

Every time I read: "we will see if we can implement this in the future", to me it means "It’s just a push-back formula thinking no one’s gonna come back on it."

PS: A page is to promote a company, to promote a product, to promote a person, ... but the page owner have no statistic for example.

I rather imagined that we could just use custom fields as custom fields.
The EasySocial Custom Field Search module is a good start
However, its use is very limited.

• This module only works with Dropdown fields
  
• We must select a category in the parameters
  
• Conditional Custom Fields are not supported
  
• Results are not displayed directly in the listing (Ajax)
  

Perhaps you could improve this module...

Besides, I share the same problem as Tony. This impossibility of being able to classify a Group or a Page in several categories is very annoying.
I know that the issue of ACL is problematic.
But maybe it should be done as for EasyBlog, and always have the Primary Category (which defined the group's ACL parameters).
And then be able to check Secondaries Categories (just for display in the listing)...

I understand that your situation is not simple. Difficult to please everyone.

We all agree that the functioning of the Group and Page listings must really evolve !

In summary, we would like to have these three features :

1. Secondary Categories to be able to classify a Group or a Page in several categories.
   
2. Tags to associate certain Groups or Pages according to one or more themes, and create a list of predefined results. Like Hashtags for Videos.
   
3. A more advanced EasySocial Custom Field Search module, to filter the results of the listing of Groups and Pages, in real time (Ajax) and according to a multitude of criteria (and fields types).
   

In fact EasyBlog has exactly these three features !! So why not EasySocial ?

We're going to make Mark dizzy, but after all it is important that we debate these subjects

I think I get most of this thread. If I am off track apologies.


What I am saying here applies to groups but I guess could just as easily apply to Pages or Events. I can image tags, sub categories or what ever this workflow is called as being a way to set up a more granular pay wall.

As in for eg in any given group have certain items that are tagged as free, or premium or extra premium. Items could include videos, discussions, chat what ever.

Tie this up with Pay Plans and limit access to certain parts of Groups.

Hope this makes some kind of sense!

Tags could be interesting for associating Groups with each other.
But what worries me is that Tags have no hierarchy and no parents/children.

While a category may be the child of another category, and thus create a logical tree structure.
The multi-category function would give the same result as Tags, with the advantage of providing clear navigation to users, a tree structure.

Navigating within categories is easy.
I can't find any examples of sites that use Tags for navigation...

Have you never used Joomlas tag structure??? its a lot of power and you can add some extra Joomla tags extensions to have a very very powerful solution.

This would be the dream to use Joomlas own tags integrated work also with EasySocial common tags structure were you can have nested tags navigation categories filtering options similar like Drupal taxonomies, vocabularies a n d tags.

Things like tag clouds are just bad navigation and never works when you have +30 tags etc thats grows

I can’t write a word of code but….

In the video editing world I live in I use a program called Final Cut Pro X.
One of the many reasons I like it is the way it deals with Meta Data.

So for example I look at a clip and assign a “Keyword” to a section of time.
I do this for multiple clips with multiple “Keywords”.
Obviously the same “Keywords” are used multiple times.

Then I create a “Smart Collection” a smart collection which is in essence Boolean search.
So if I have for eg 3 “Keywords” eg Cats, Dogs and Rabbits then I can search combinations…

I don’t understand why something like this could not be implemented in Easy Social.

Where “Keywords” become “Tags”

As in:

1) Have different Groups/Pages/Events
2) In any given Group/Page/Event have certain items that are tagged as eg:
a) Cats, Dogs and Rabbits
b) Free, or premium or extra premium.
(Items could include videos, discussions, chat what ever)
3) Use Pay Plans to set up “Smart Collections”
As in people visiting the site have different access depending to what plan they signed up for.

So in the end the Categories and Tags would be very complementary.

Being able to fine tune who has access to what content (using different "Easy" SI components) on a site seems to me to be a more than reasonable feature request. Features like this would make it “Easier” for us to earn money off our sites and buy more amazing "Easy" products and support from you and your amazing team.

Mark recently provided answer to this idea of Tags.

Because of the flexibility in EasySocial, it requires proper thinking and planning before rolling out any of these features. We did thought about revamping categories and changing it to "item type" while introducing tagging which serves as categories.
But this is something that needs to be carefully executed as different sites are using the current categories very differently.

We've been asking for this feature for many years.
This should have been developed by Stackideas itself, but we can no longer count on them, we have to manage ourselves.

Now Pages and MarketPlaces can now be categorized into multiple categories.
And the user is autonomous, it is he who defines in which categories.
